Description: The creation of Dolly the sheep in the 1990s was for many people the start of a new era: the age of genetically modified animals. However, the idea was not new for in the 1920s an amateur scientist, Hans Duncker, decided to genetically engineer a red canary. Though his experiments failed, they paved the way for others to succeed when it was recognised that the canary needed to be both a product of nature and nurture. This highly original narrative, of huge contemporary relevance, reveals how the obsession with turning the wild canary from green to red heralded the exciting but controversial developments in genetic manipulation. • Waterstones Hitler's Savage Canary

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Adolf Hitler stated that after occupation Denmark would turn into a model protectorate'. Winston Churchill, meanwhile, maintained that the small country of (then) four million people would become the sadistic murderer's canary'. In the end, neither was right. Though their resistance organisation was slower to develop effective tactics on a wide scale than in some other occupied countries, with initially no help from the Allies the Danes set up a resistance movement that proved to be a constant irritation to the Axis forces. In time the Danish Resistance, the Modstandsbev gelsen, was not a meek canary, but a dangerous and courageous bird of prey that refused to be caged. The scale of the resistance to the Nazis in Denmark is without equal: twenty-six million issues of illegal newspapers had been published by 1945; radio guides for Allied aircraft had been set up on the coasts; boat services ran between Sweden, Denmark and Britain; a news bureau provided a stream of inside information to the Allies; German ships were unable to move out of the ports; and troops were frustrated by the sabotage of railways and air bases. Incredibly, almost the entire Jewish population, some 7,000 people, was shipped to safety in Sweden. The selfless courage shown by the Danes, when collaboration would have been an easy option, is astonishing. This story of heroism and daring by a small country is a thrilling read, and provides a real insight to the mindset of a people under occupation. • Waterstones Birds of Prey

    Price: £9.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Birds of Prey - or raptors - are some of the most captivating bird species in the world. Think of eagles and condors, vultures, hawks and kites, but also owls and ospreys. Think of the peregrine falcon, which, reaching speeds of up to 320km/h (200mph), is the world's fastest animal - when diving. From the New World Caracaras to the Oriental Hobby, the Northern Goshawk to the Swamp Harrier to the European Merlin, Birds of Prey explores the fascinating lifecycles, habitats, diets and, where applicable, migratory patterns, of more than 100 species from all around the world. They primarily hunt and feed on vertebrates that are large relative to the hunter. They have keen eyesight, being able to spot their prey from great distances, and strong feet equipped with talons for grasping or killing prey, and powerful, curved beaks for tearing flesh. In addition to hunting live prey, most also eat carrion, at least occasionally, and vultures and condors eat carrion as their main food source. With full captions explaining how the species hunt and feed, nest and rear their young, Birds of Prey is a brilliant examination in 240 outstanding colour photographs.
