Review: Thrilling mystery on par with other books in the Seeker series and draws you in to the Cromwellian secret service.

Review: Having read the first book and quite enjoyed it, I thought I'd try the second novel. Some aspects of the character of the Seeker himself remind me of Darth Vader - large character, wears black, powerful friends, supposedly feared by most. But this gives the writer a problem when they want their big scary man to have some depth, and not be all bad. In my opinion S.G McLean does this no better than George Lucas, and the Seeker ends up no more believable than Vader. The plot is a little over contrived for my liking, and loses credibility somewhere in the middle, by the end I was expecting "the baddie" to say "and I'd have got away with it if it weren't for you kids", there's even a lovable hound, though no mention off Scoobie Snacks. Critics seem to be drawing similarities to CJ Sansom, I hope SG McLean is suitably flattered but I'd have to ask those making such comparisons whether they have really read works by either of the two authors or made the judgements from the pictures on the covers. I'd also suggest the author needs a better editor as there are sections of the text which don't read well. All that said, I enjoyed the books and will try out some other SG MacLane works, in the hope they focus on historical accuracy and credible story lines, and less on other popular fiction.
