Review: Firstly, unlike many early reviewers, I paid for this book. And it was worth every penny. Just saying. So, Thorne's back in his own scraggy clothes, driving the police pool Galaxy (something happened to his rust bucket a couple of books back) and struggling to sneak his country and western Wailings-to-Slash-Yer-Wrists-to past Holland's slightly more educated ear in the passenger seat. All back to normal then......or not. For those fans desperately awaiting more banter from the Bengal Lancer, gay waifs and strays fighting for sofa space amongst the empty poppadom packets or trying to catch Mark out on the number of traffic lights between Swiss Cottage and Kentish Town, this one will leave you wanting. It begins on the way, via a prison, to a remote Welsh island off the coast of, well.....Wales. 2 handcuffed prisoners in tow, one of whom is Thorne's nemesis, Nicklin, promising to reveal where he put The Body(s?) 25 years ago. But enough of synopses. There are plenty of those around. Like most fans, I really like Tom Thorne best in his own North London stomping ground, so was a bit wary about this. But within 2 pages I realised that it didn't matter at all. The banter's back (though not enough......more please Mark! You are a comedian after all and we love the one liners - especially when there's a whole page of them!) Thorne trying to second guess Nicklin was cleverly done and we were drip fed snippets, introduced to a cast of characters and left wondering who wasn't quite who they were supposed to be, in the usual Billingham way. (No other writer seems to do this quite so well.) I was actually one step ahead of Thorne in this one and got the twist long before it was revealed - a fact of which I am inordinately proud and feeling ever so slightly smug about! But I was given a tiny bit more information than Thorne was and I knew where to look for clues, being a hardened Billinghamite! The banter between Thorne and Nicklin was the real story here - a psychological battle between 2 cunning minds, Thorne nervously suspicious of Nicklin; Nicklin calmly goading Thorne at every opportunity. This was a great fast read. As usual Thorne did something not quite by the book, which normally has me gasping "NO! You really can't do that!' This time, however, I was urging him on as it definitely was the ONLY thing to do in my mind or else......aaggh!.....no I can't! Oh it's so difficult to review books without giving anything away but still trying to make sense! So just buy it. If you're already a fan it's up there with Sleepyhead, Bloodline and Lazybones and if you're new to the party it's still a great yarn. I do agree with another reviewer about Helen. She doesn't bring much to the table. Other than that it's pretty much perfection Mr Billingham! More please....and soon!

Review: First time I have read Billingham. I was aware Thorne was an established character but the book is well written and easily stands alone if you do not know Thorne. He is tasked with taking convicted killer Stuart Nicklin to a remote Welsh island where Nicklin has stated he will reveal the grave of a hitherto missing victim. He will only do this if Thorne is part of the party on this voyage of discovery. Nicklin and Thorne have history and as circumstances and the weather conspire things start to go awry. The tension builds throughout and you know Nicklin is up to something more, but what. Not in the same class as Peter Mays 'Lewis' trilogy for evoking the bleakness of the setting but well done nevertheless. Well worth a read.
