Review: This is a sad but chilling story about corruption . Once I opened the book I couldn't put it down. It is a frightening view of how a generation was corrupted, embodied in the story of one little boy. Very well written by an excellent story teller

Review: I have read a few John Boyne books now and I consider myself a fan, I look out for his new stuff and generally enjoy them all so I was looking forward to reading “The Boy at the Top of the Mountain”. The main character is Pierrot, a young boy whose mother is French and his dad is German. Pierrot finds himself torn between the two cultures and also his best friend, Anshel, a Jewish boy. Pierrot loses both his parents and lives in an orphanage but is eventually taken by his aunt, a housekeeper for Hitler. Pieter soon becomes indoctrinated by his awe for Hitler and succumbs to the sin of pride, becoming so full of his own importance that he neglects those around them who have been kind and loving. Pieter becomes a true Nazi. This book was equally scary and fascinating. To see a young boy at his most vulnerable time being so easily changed to someone else, undoing all the beliefs and morals that his parents gave him and turning into someone they wouldn’t recognise was horrifying. This book has Boyne’s usual writing skill with a good pace and strong characters. I think this book is intended for young adults which may be why it is a horrible time in history presented in a lighter style. Some of the conversations seemed too simple and I found the presentation of Hitler a bit unbelievable. It’s hard, as horrific things happen in this book but it doesn’t seem horrific enough for what we know of that period and Hitler himself. This is a great presentation of the influence people can have on young children and although written well, this was not my favourite Boyne book.
