Review: I bought this book to update a rather old (1997) Dorling Kindersley 'Flags of the world'. Johnson Barker's book is a reasonable guide to world of vexillology and with all such titles it becomes a sort of compromise as to what to leave out, obviously all the country flags are included but should flags of states within countries be included. The book has a the US state flags and those of Australia but not those of Russia. There is, almost at the end of the book, a section on de facto states including, for example, Dniester Republic, South Ossetia or Western Sahara, so the book tries to be as up to date as possible. Unfortunately I did find the title rather annoying to use. The first thing I noticed was that the paper is too thick (actually a nice matt art) for use in a relatively small book. It can't be opened almost flat because of the paper and though it's bound in sections they are glued to the cover. I can't see it lasting long in any library before the binding breaks. Instead of running the countries alphabetically in each chapter they seem to be based on their longtitude and latitude position on the globe. So the chapter on Africa starts with Morocco then Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia et cetera, this seems a needlessly complex way of presenting information for a reader. Luckily there is a five page Index at the back. 'Flags of the world' didn't really come up to my expectations especially when I came across another book for the same price: Alfred Znamierowski's 'World encyclopedia of flags' (ISBN 9780754826293). This has to be the ultimate flag title with 1400 illustrations and 600 flags in current use.
