Review: The quote from this intriguing book, 'How the fabric of music is woven' says it all. The attractive presentation with beautiful pictures such as the `temple of music' makes it a book that is good to handle and a delight. The subject matter, covering the relationships of tones and rhythm includes an amazing amount of information from the basics to refreshing insights into form, tonality, modulations and analysis of harmonies, so clearly presented and very readable. I have learnt so much from it and already made sure that a couple of my piano pupils have a copy of the book. The size is A6, I am amazed at how much is packed in this compact and very useful book. Review written by my wife Lesley Bunce, who is a piano teacher.

Review: The book downloads as a tiny box mid screen, with miniscule text, very difficult to read, and the illustrations even worse. Disappointing, because it looks like a good book. I've tried altering text size, but for this book that setting seems to be frozen.

  • Waterstones Harriet Martineau's Autobiography

    Price: £37.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) was a British writer who was one of the first social theorists to examine all aspects of a society, including class, religion, national character and the status of women. These volumes, first published in 1877, contain Martineau's unusual autobiography. Written in three months in 1855 when she believed herself to be dying, the original two volumes remained unaltered despite her recovery and continued writing. The third volume, covering the remainder of Martineau's life, was written by her friend and literary executor, Maria Chapman, who had access to Martineau's private papers. These works were the first substantial published account of Martineau's life and work, and remain a remarkable example of the genre for Martineau's vivid descriptions and candid, outspoken opinions of Victorian society. Volume 3 contains Chapman's biography of Martineau. For more information on this author, see http://orlando. Cambridge. Org/public/sv People?person_id=martha. • Waterstones Music by the Numbers

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: How music has influenced mathematics, physics, and astronomy from ancient Greece to the twentieth century Music is filled with mathematical elements. The works of Bach are often said to possess a math-like logic, and Arnold Schoenberg, Iannis Xenakis, and Karlheinz Stockhausen wrote music explicitly based on mathematical principles. Yet Eli Maor argues that it is music that has had the greater influence on mathematics, not the other way around. Starting with Pythagoras, proceeding through Schoenberg, and bringing the story up to the present with contemporary string theory, Music by the Numbers tells a fascinating story of composers, scientists, inventors, and eccentrics who have played a role in the age-old relationship between music, mathematics, and the physical sciences. Weaving compelling stories of historical episodes with Maor's personal reflections as a mathematician and lover of classical music, this book will delight anyone who loves math and music.
