Description: What is the meaning of life? How should I live? Is there any purpose to the universe? Generations have turned to the great German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer because he tackled the big issues. His influence has extended not only to later philosophers - Nietzsche foremost among them - but across the most brilliant novelists, musicians, and artists of all disciplines. Schopenhauer believed that the world was a cold, absurd place, and that it was only by the force of an individual's Will that any meaning could be created. He also believed that the universe itself had a Will-a spiritual force many have likened to The Way, spoken of by Taoists. This, the first English collection of Schopenhauer's work, is a much-needed book. Schopenhauer wrote thousands of pages. Volume 1 of his most famous work, The World as Will and Representation, alone runs over 750 pages. As a result, it has been daunting to know where to begin to read Schopenhauer, despite his immense reputation. Now, just as Basic Writings did for Heidegger and Nietzsche, our new collection will open English readers to Schopenhauer's profound ideas - almost as if for the first time. Review: This is heavy stuff, for a pea brain such as I. Each time I pick it up, and have to re read a page ten times, and then I am confused. But I think I get the gist. "Life is S*** and then you die" Job done.

Review: This is an edited selection of Schopenhauer's work, mostly from his early "The World as Will and Representation", but including selections from later works. The selecting has presumably been done by Schirmacher, who has also written an introduction. The purpose of this book seems to be to present to the general reader the "gist" of Schopenhauer's philosophy. The whole project, however honest its aim may be, is deeply flawed. It is not easy - indeed I found it impossible - to identify which of Schopenhauer's books the selections are taken from. We are told they are largely from "The World as Will and Representaion", but there is nothing obvious to distinguish which bits are from elsewehere. Once we are within Schrimacher's selected text, elisions appear - as [ . . . ] - betraying the fact that Schirmacher has excised part of Schopenhauer's text. This alone is enough to make one profoundly uneasy about accepting this book as a portrayal of Schopenhauer's thought. An academic text should make its sources blindingly clear, and these elisions - well, what has been edited out? Fluff, waffle - or something which dilutes the particular picture of Schopenhauer which the editor wishes to get across? We turn to the introduction to get some idea of Schirmacher's approach. It very soon becomes clear to the British reader that Schirmacher has a US sensitivity and US priorities. He assumes a largely church-going audience. He drags in, rather clumsily, apocalyptic attitudes to technology, the future of humanity and the fate of the planet. He tries to link Schopenhauer to almost every guru of modern times from Freud and Darwin (where the link is clear) to such sundry figures as Karl Popper, Hobbes, Lacan, Albert Camus and Derrida. He attempts to make Schopenhauer at one with Heidegger, and in the process makes rather a mess of explaining Heidegger. In fact he seems to have tried to make Schopenhauer an influence on everyone he can think of, without any supporting arguments or relevant quotations. The language of the introduction is often obscure and some of the sentences do not make sense. Nor does Schirmacher's confident assertion that Schopenhauer is a Zen master (a misreading of either Zen or of Schopenhauer). But the oddest distortion comes near the end when Schirmacher, having acknowledged Schopenhauer's manicheist aversion to bringing more victims into this suffering world, suddenly drags in the subject of birth control. Schopenhauer's stance is that the "will to live", manifesting itself in this case as the sex drive, is to be conquered, ideally by celibacy, and that having babies is simply adding to suffering humanity and, in the light of his insights, an act to be avoided. Schirmacher, apparently commenting on this, opines that contraception allows us to have sex without procreating, and adds "Raising children also has an excellent chance of becoming a choice for the many people who are good at it and enjoy mentoring offspring". Somehow, though I am not president of the International Schopenhauer Association, I cannot help feeling this is not what Schopenhauer is saying, even in this selection. I am going to have to do more than read through this book to get to grips with Schopenhauer's philosophy, but I suspect I will move on to an unedited text and reassure myself that I am reading what Schopenhauer actually wrote, and not someone else's "edited highlights". One thing I was able to confirm straight away, however. Schopenhauer is regularly cited as a Christian philosopher, or one who has meaningful truths about Christianity to convey. Reading "Mystics, Saints, Ascetics", it is clear why theologians reject him. Schopenhauer's worldview, as stated here, is manichean; i.e. it views the world not as a divinely created perfection infused with the godhead, in which only man is vile, but as a grisly, foul, unredeemable pit of misery and horror. He uses the word "salvation" to refer to the Nirvana of Buddhism; to the escape from the circle of reincarnation described by eastern religions, also to the "state of grace" IN THIS WORLD acheived, as a result of their own efforts, by Christian mystics who practice self-denial. He passes over the standard views of the varying sects of Christianity, that "salvation" is something which affects one's fate after death, not before, and which can be achieved either by service to others and the intercession of the priesthood, or, in other sects, by faith alone and a personal dialogue with Christ. The view of Christianity presented by Schopenhauer is Manicheist and Gnostic. I am not passing judgement on its validity, only pointing out that his views, with their emphasis on the denial of life, on the relative unimportance of altruism (for him altruism is a welcome symptom of the denial of the will, not a virtue to be cultivated because of the help it brings to others), and the neglect of the concept of the afterlife, are not compatible with any of the major Christian theologies. For Schopenhauer, happiness is no more than the absence of suffering (he does not contrast, as we would, true happiness, a fleeting glow, with contentment, a longer-lasting acceptance of one's lot). Yet, without suffering we are nothing, and would, he asserts, kill ourselves or murder each other from, presumably, an excess of boredom or adrenalin, if the sources of our suffering were removed. From this apparent (in fact constructed) paradox, much is derived. Schopenhauer sets up men of straw: all happiness is trash, all contentment delusion, love a source only of angst and grief - ergo, if all is suffering, we have to find a philosophy to explain it. Some, he concedes, might take issue with this originating premise but, fear not, you're deluded and your life is hell, whether you know it or not. And so on. Anyone who wants a good laugh, however, can read his views on women.

Description: Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was one of the greatest writers and German philosophers of the nineteenth century. His work influenced figures as diverse as Wagner, Freud and Nietzsche. Best known as a pessimist, he was one of the few philosophers read and admired by Wittgenstein. In this comprehensive introduction, Julian Young covers all the main aspects of Schopenhauer's philosophy. Beginning with an overview of Schopenhauer's life and work, he introduces the central aspects of his metaphysics fundamental to understanding his work as a whole: his philosophical idealism and debt to the philosophy of Kant; his attempt to answer the question of what the world is; his account of science; and in particular his idea that 'will' is the essence of all things. Julian Young then introduces and assesses Schopenhauer's aesthetics, which occupy a central place in his philosophy. He carefully examines Schopenhauer's theories of the sublime, artistic genius and music, before assessing his ethics of compassion, his arguments for pessimism and his account of 'salvation'. In the final chapter, he considers Schopenhauer's legacy and his influence on the thought of Nietzsche and Wittgenstein, making this an ideal starting point for those coming to Schopenhauer for the first time.

  • Waterstones Decoding Schopenhauer’s Metaphysics

    Price: £9.99

Description: First proposed more than 200 years ago, Schopenhauer's extraordinarily prescient metaphysics if understood along the lines thoroughly elucidated and substantiated in this volume offers powerful answers not only to the paradoxes of quantum mechanics, but also to modern philosophical dilemmas such as the hard problem of consciousness which plagues mainstream physicalism, and the subject combination problem which plagues constitutive panpsychism. This invaluable treasure of the Western philosophical canon has eluded us so far because Schopenhauer's argument has been consistently misunderstood and misrepresented, even at the hands of presumed experts. Hoping to change this situation, Decoding Schopenhauer's Metaphysics, offers a conceptual framework, a decoding key for unlocking the sense of Schopenhauer's metaphysical contentions in a way that renders them mutually consistent. With this key in mind, even those who earlier dismissed Schopenhauer's metaphysics should be able to return to it with fresh eyes and at last grasp its meaning. And for those as yet unacquainted with Schopenhauerian thought, this volume offers a succinct and accessible entry path. Description: Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) is something of a maverick figure in the history of philosophy. He produced a unique theory of the world and human existence based upon his notion of will. This collection analyses the related but distinct components of will from the point of view of epistemology, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, aesthetics, ethics, and the philosophy of psychoanalysis. This volume explores Schopenhauer's philosophy of death, his relationship to the philosophy of Kant, his use of ideas drawn from both Buddhism and Hinduism, and the important influence he exerted on Nietzsche, Freud, and Wittgenstein. Description: Arthur Schopenhauer devoted his adult life to the articulation of a philosophy for the world, a philosophy that would benefit mankind by providing a solution to the riddle of existence. Often considered a thoroughgoing pessimist, Schopenhauer in fact advocated ways - via artistic, moral and ascetic forms of awareness - to overcome a frustration-filled and fundamentally painful human condition. Though presented in luminous prose, Schopenhauer's philosophy was ignored for most of his life. Yet fifty years after his death his ideas were being celebrated by intellectuals, writers and artists. His name became a byword for philosophical greatness. This new critical biography provides a concise introduction to the life and work of the nineteenth-century German philosopher, situating the principal doctrines of his philosophy in the context of his life. Philosopher and scholar Peter B. Lewis describes and explains all the major events, as well as the philosopher's ideas on the meaning of life, the nature of art, religion and morality. He also relates Schopenhauer's ideas to the intellectual and cultural background of early nineteenth-century Germany. Schopenhauer's philosophy has always held a special attraction for those who wonder about life's meaning, as well as those interested in music, literature and the visual arts. Illustrated with portraits and photographs of Schopenhauer, and his family and contemporaries, Arthur Schopenhauer will engage all those readers, as well as students and scholars of Schopenhauer and nineteenth-century philosophy.

This translation of the first volume of what later became a two-volume work reflects the eloquence and power of Schopenhauer's prose and renders philosophical terms accurately and consistently. Description: Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) was a German philosopher and a proponent of pessimistic philosophy. Deeply cynical of love and the want for children, he believed humans are all mere animals - just far more unhappy, because of our self-awareness. The porcupine dilemma is a metaphor about the challenges of human intimacy. Schopenhauer believed that, despite our good intentions, human intimacy cannot occur without substantial harm. By adapting famous animal parables, the Pocket Philosophy series seeks to introduce inquisitive readers of all ages - from 1 to 100! - to the biggest names in philosophy. Price: £26.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Written in 1839 and chosen as the winning entry in a competition held by the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences, Schopenhauer's Prize Essay on the Freedom of the Will marked the beginning of its author's public recognition and is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant and elegant treatments of free will and determinism. Schopenhauer distinguishes the freedom of acting from the freedom of willing, affirming the former while denying the latter. He portrays human action as thoroughly determined but also argues that the freedom which cannot be established in the sphere of human action is preserved at the level of our innermost being as individuated will, whose reality transcends all dependency on outside factors. This volume offers the text in a previously unpublished translation by Eric F. J. Payne, the leading twentieth-century translator of Schopenhauer into English, together with a historical and philosophical introduction by Guenter Zöller.
