Description: The Pilgrim of Hate: As the pilgrims gather at Shrewsbury, in distant Winchester a knight has been murdered. Among the throng of pilgrims, some strange customers indeed begin to puzzle Brother Cadfael, and as events unfold it becomes clear that the murder is a much less remote affair that it first seemed. An Excellent Mystery: In 1141 England is still torn by civic strife. Among the victims of the carnage is the Abbey of Hyde Meade, totally destroyed. But as its brothers attempt to rebuild their lives, old wounds are re-opened, painfully relived and harsh deeds committed. Only Brother Cadfael can ultimately distinguish between victim, innocent and guilty party. The Raven in the Foregate: Abbot Radulfus returns from London, bringing with him a priest for the vacant living of the Holy Cross (known as the Foregate)- a man of scholarship and discipline, but not humility. When he is found drowned in the millpond, suspicion is cast in many directions.and only the perseverance of Brother Cadfael can unravel the threads that lead to the murderer. Review: These omnibus editions are better value than the individual stories. This is my second time through the Cadfael series, but lack of access to libraries is forcing me to buy books that I used to read for free. If you like medieval mysteries then the Cadfael series is a good one, and although they can be read in any order, they are set chronologically and the first few stories set the scene and introduce characters that stay throughout. I must admit I was never a fan of history at school, but these books bring this period to life. Set in Shrewsbury during a Civil War that no history teacher ever mentioned to me. they are well-written and well-researched. The location is also an easy day trip for me so it's nice to visit and recognise a lot of the locations mentioned in the story. I enjoyed it and will read more.

Review: Have enjoyed many of these books and this was no exception. A pleasure to read. Transported back centuries to intrigue and sleuthing without benefit of technology.
