Review: Having been a devotee of Julia Donaldson's books ever since my son (now 7.5) was born, I was delighted to discover this one, which I recently read to my son as a bedtime story. We have inevitably now adopted some favourite words of Groilish into our family vocabulary! The story follows a family of 3 human children who are 'collected' by a young giant girl who has always believed in the mythical 'iggly plops' (humans) of her fairytales. She takes them home to Groil (giantland) and keeps them as pets in her dollshouse. They spend the next few weeks trying to escape her loving (but increasinly distracted) attentions and her unpleasant brother's torments, keeping hidden from the giant parents (Mij and Pij) and pets while hoping to find their way back home down the beanstalk ('bimplestonk'). The story is of course wonderfully written, and focuses primarily on Jumbelia, the giant girl, and Colette, the human girl, who relates closely to her captor, as she is also an irrepressible collector of 'stuff'. very exciting, and perfect for children aged 6+, to read themselves, or to have read to them.

Review: Firstly, as a concept, the idea of giants being scared of humans (if indeed they even exist?), and vice-versa, is quite interesting and, given Donaldson's peerless back catalogue of popular children's stories, this book seemed a good choice for a six year old. Sadly, however, the story telling is laboured, the plot rambling and ill-conceived and, at times, considering that this book is aimed at young children, the content is unexpectedly and unnecessarily unpleasant and downright scary! This is certainly not a good choice for a book before bedtime, unless of course you like your children to have nightmares full of deadly man-sized wasps and spiders, cruel giants who physically and verbally taunt and abuse their captive children, and killer kittens who prey on young toddlers. In short, one to avoid, and proof that even great writers can have their off days! In truth, if it wasn't written by Julia Donaldson, I am certain that the publisher wouldn't have given her the paper to print it on (or whatever the Kindle equivalent of that is these days!). Disappointing, distressing and ill-judged.
