Review: I bought a proper slow cooker a few months ago, hoping to make my daily routine a bit easier but I've yet to master it so I resort to websites or cookbooks to guide me. Being Greek myself, this cookbook instantly caught my eye and I ordered it the day it came out. It may be worth noting that I do cook daily but the dishes I grew up with are often hard to replicate when time is short. Browsing through the book, first thing I noticed was the beautiful photos accompanying very familiar to me recipes that brought a nostalgic smile to my face. Now what is familiar to me will not necessarily be to you: souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, the instantly recognisable as Greek food on holidays, are not included here and neither are my favourite pies. And with good reason as slow cookers don't work with all meals. However. This is a book about proper, home cooked, comfort food. The one that my mum would have cooked and waiting for me after school. Most of it, Mediterranean diet based, yes heavily including meat but also vegetables, fish and pulses. Although I haven't tried it yet, I can see using this book often and for a long time, while I bring to my own children the flavours I grew up with, without spending all day over the hob. To be fair, I have deducted one star from an otherwise beautiful book for this: I doubt that the ingredients suggested, original though they may be, can realistically be found easily, even online (buying specialist groceries online is not for me nor is it affordable for everyone). More substitutions would have been helpful but my understanding is that this book is primarily adapted for the American market and suggesting them would have excluded us in Europe. Having said that, still a beautiful book, very useful if you want to experiment with Greek food.
