Review: A beautiful collection of thought and emotion provoking short stories written by Oscar Wilde. The Happy Prince: A swallow has just come out of a relationship, with a reed and is looking for somewhere to spend the night before he heads off to Egypt. He finds a nice statue to shelter under and settles down. However, the statue starts crying and when the swallow asks why, he is sent on an important task. The Nightingale and The Rose: A nightingale overhears a student who cannot find a red rose to give to the love of his life. For the sake of true love, the nightingale makes a huge sacrifice to get the student the red rose. The Selfish Giant: A giant comes back from his hols in Cornwall to find children playing in his garden. He tells them off and puts up a trespasser sign. In disgust at his behaviour Spring doesn’t come to his garden and he is left in a permanent winter. The Devoted Friend: A rich miller considers himself a devoted friend to Hans. He helps himself to the fruits of Hans garden which Hans doesn’t mind but never seems to give anything in return. The Remarkable Rocket: A roman candle firework thinks it’s very fortunate for the King’s son to happen to have his wedding day on the very same day the rocket is going to be set off. I loved all these stories. They all have their own strong moral to teach us and we should definitely learn it. I did feel a lot of sadness for the characters when they were taken advantage of, but the kindness shown more than makes up for it. I can’t really say a lot more except these stories are very quick reads but packed full of thought provoking charm. I give this book five stars for its charm.
