Review: I am late to the party with this title, as I started withWhile We Can't Hug , by the same duo. I couldn’t stop myself purchasing this one, too…ready to pass on…when the world gets back to that stage! ooOoo ~ TITLE: THE HUG ~ AUTHOR: EOIN MCLAUGHLIN ~ ILLUSTRATOR: POLLY DUNBAR ~ PUBLISHER: FABER & FABER ~ 2019 ‘Printed in Italy’ ooOoo Thicker than expected, the paperback book measures around 24.75 cm square and has an added dimension to the format…one half of the book is ‘upside down’ (it is a shame that the ISBN is on the cover to indicate back & front, IMO)! Anyway… ‘The Hug’ involves two main characters, namely hedgehog & tortoise, both having half a book to tell their story! With a neat, repeat element to the two sides, so to speak, the duo individually meet a variety of characters, each with their own story to tell as to why they are way too busy to indulge in the key thing, until the ‘two someones’ meet in the middle for… 'THE HUG'! The current stock images, LOOK INSIDE facility & publisher detail all give a great indication of the content, and the storyline is just…well…brilliant, also IMO! Some of the excuses the animals come up with, and the meaningful facial expressions, are priceless, and opportunities present to all join in with the various single words, in the clear black text, emphasised at times FOR EFFECT, such as ~ BANG! ~ CRASH! ~ SPLAT! ~ BOING!
