Review: I don't know why I didn't review this book when I read it when it was first published. An unusual character to write a novel about - Alice Perrers, but very interesting. Filled with the usual Anne O'Brien touch of magic of course. Alice's voice through the centuries has almost completely censored. She has always been portrayed as self seeking, sharp tongued, selfish and extremely ugly to boot. Poor Alice!! The reason why Phillipa chose her to serve as a damsel will never be known. Did Phillipa chose her to be Edward's mistress? We will never know the truth. But Edward did choose her and she did become his official concubine after Phillipa's death. Again, the reasons why are lost in the mists of time. Alice must have been a very clever, intelligent and astute young woman. Why was the so called bastard of a labourer and tavern wench be so well educated? And yet she was. I think she did love Edward, protecting him when he couldn't stand up for himself. And she risked a lot to be with him at the end of his life. She was hated amongst the aristocracy, especially, it seems, by Princess Joan. Did she find love with William de Windsor? I think when she allowed herself to need someone, I think she did. I hope they had a good life. It seems odd that William didn't leave her his properties in his will. Did this include her properties as well? Another good read Miss. O'Brien. Thank you.

Review: I did and didn't enjoy this. This was my first book by this author. It was written superbly, with an eye for details. I loved the first half of the book, Alice's rise to court. Her relationship with Queen Phillipa. At about 60% it became more political/court intrigue. More talking than actual things happening. I had really enjoyed it up until that, and some parts after were still fantastic but the last half of the book really let it down for me.
