Review: Star Trek this most certainly is not! Without spoilers as usual, and as briefly as I can, an object is discovered approaching Earth, the difference is, it starts to slow down of it's own volition, something that comets/meteors for example can't do (unless their trajectory is impeded). A joint NASA/military underwritten venture is sent to intercept and discover if this is going to be a problem or not, by some very different characters on board the NASA space vessel and what follows is an exploration of some seriously alien and frighteningly realistic concepts by the writer. A little long winded in places it's nevertheless a gripping and in places, scary book and with a realistic premise. What is everyday and acceptable science from a human POV, would perhaps be as alien to extra terrestrial visitors as they might be to us. The clever part of the writing is to do so thinking (and creating) from the potential aliens' view. What follows is well worth a read for fans of the genre and perhaps for any thriller lovers, who fancy a change from their normal literary diet.

Review: Probably the most striking thing about The Last Astronaut is that it brought back a strong memory of a remarkable book by Arthur C Clarke, 'Rendezvous With Rama'. The settings for both stories are similar, a vast alien artifact moving through space, inside which exists an environment like nothing seen before. The Last Astronaut adds elements of horror reminiscent of those found in the film 'Alien'. There is even a Ripley lookalike in the leading role. So overall, not a bad read, but decidedly derivative.
