Review: Unfortunately I feel strongly that this book provides very negative ways of thinking about food, exercise, and body image. The Lighthouse keeper is overweight, and during the story this becomes problematic for his involvement in sports games and thwarts his journey home from the picnic because he can't fit through a hole. The description of his subsequent attempts to diet, undertake forced and exhausting exercise, endure pressure from his wife, and end up hiding and sneakily eating treats, provide an unnecessarily problematic relationship with food and the body. I think obesity needs to be tackled in a way that doesn't problematise eating. If my 3 year old chooses this story I read it replacing or omitting these bits. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story flows well. But I wouldn't recommend this to friends and family.
