Description: Rachel Khoo cooks up a storm from her tiny Parisian kitchen, bringing the magic of France into our homes. The 'little kitchen' concept might be a considerable hindrance to most chefs, but Khoo has made the most of it' New York Times' The fabulous fairy godmother of French cuisine' Easy Living Rachel Khoo was determined to get to grips with French cooking, so to learn more she moved to Paris, not speaking a word of French, and enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu, the world-famous cookery school. From a Croque Madame muffin and the classic Boeuf bourguignon, to a deliciously fragrant Provencal lavender and lemon roast chicken, Rachel celebrates the culinary landscape of France as it is today and shows how simple these dishes are. The 120 recipes in the book range from easy, everyday dishes like Omelette Pipérade, to summer picnics by the Seine and afternoon 'goûter' (snacks), to meals with friends and delicious desserts including classics like Crème brulee and Tarte tatin. It's a book that celebrates the very best of French home-cooking in a modern and accessible way. In The Little Paris Kitchen, Rachel Khoo serves up a modern twist on classic French cooking. After graduating from Central Saint Martin's College with a degree in Art and Design, British food writer Rachel was lured to Paris to study pâtisserie at Le Cordon Bleu. Rachel shot to fame when her TV series, The Little Paris Kitchen, was broadcast by BBC. Rachel now travels the world working on a variety of projects, including a weekly recipe column for the Evening Standard.

Review: Sorry about the terrible pun there. I was really excited to get this book, but I found it a little disappointing. My parents are Julia Child addicts but I've always been a bit intimidated by that small, dense book...so when I heard that this was 'French cooking made simple with a modern twist' I thought, 'Great! This is my way in, and maybe I can impress my parents with my chic new repertoire.' Khoo does, thankfully, abandon Mastering the Art of French Cooking's chapter on aspics (endless varieties of meat jelly... shudder) and doesn't instruct us to boil a live lobster, but she does include a foie gras recipe. The production of foie gras is outlawed in the UK because it is so barbaric; to include it here is both very outdated and not really in fitting with her 'modern approach', and also indicates that she doesn't give a stuff about where her food comes from and the food industries she's supporting. Really disappointing. There's also a lot of pointless photos in the book (It annoyed me so much I counted - they amount to about 46 pages...) of Khoo looking pretty / putting something in the oven and then taking it out again / arty shots of Paris etc. I would have preferred more recipes. Many of my favourite French dishes aren't in there, and some seem like very safe options, for example quite a lot of pages of various things you can put on toast as a snack, and a recipe for Chicken and mushooms in a white wine sauce, which seems quite tame when she could have included something amazing like Supremes de Volaille Archiduc (chicken in creamy paprika sauce - Julia Child does a fantastic one). However there are some recipes that do look really nice; I'd like to try the Lemon and Lavender chicken, the Meatballs in spicey sauce with alsatain pasta, and the Steak and root vegetable fries is a lovely twist on the classic. The lemon-curd-filled madeleines inspired me to finally get a madeleine tray and make those, so it's not all bad - I'd just prefer less filler and a bit more imagination please. *Please note this review is from my blog becca-likes-books.tumblr.com*
