Review: The Maudsley Guidelines is indispensible and I use it every day in clinical practice. I pre-ordered the new edition back in January 2021 and was disappointed when the release date kept getting pushed back. I was delighted to finally get my copy today. At first glance it seemed about the same size as the 13th edition but on closer inspection its been extensively revised with 102 extra pages of content (page length has increased from 854 to 956). The chapter with the most change is [Depression & Anxiety] with new sections on "Antidepressant Withdrawal symptoms" and "Stopping antidepressants" (which contains useful info and sample reduction schedule). There's also new sections on "Ketamine" and "Psychotostimulants in depression". Other new section include "newer LAIs" & "penfluridol weekly" & "stopping antipsychotics" [Schizophrenia chapter], "stopping lithium and mood stabilisers" [Bipolar chapter]; "delirium tremens" & "substance misuse in pregnancy" [Addictions chapter] "treatment of depression in older people" [ Prescribing in older people chapter]; "prescribing in patients with psychiatric illness at the end of life" [Drug treatment in the context of other disorders] & "intravenous formulations in psychiatry" [Miscellany]. Whew! The only down side is the paper has become noticeably thinner (to accomodate all the extra pages without increasing the overall size of the book) and I'm a bit worried that it won't survive as well as my old copy which I carry around in my work bag and use in the clinic and when working from home. I'd recommend reinforcing with some heavy duty contact paper as the softcover has a tendency to get caught in things and get damaged otherwise. Or just buy a copy for each workplace. All in all an impressive update to an essential reference work! 5 stars.

Review: The quality is unbearably awful. Pages are flimsy and fragile with a horrible feel and there is little contrast between the text and the dirty-looking pages. Arrived badly damaged too so I am returning and will not re-purchase. I will use Stahl’s and Bazire’s books instead. This is a shame as I have always bought updates of this book, though I have to say over the years it has felt increasingly ambiguous and bloated.
