Review: A friend recommended this book. It’s great, particularly as my 3 yr old daughter has mega curly hair (and even gets stopped in the street for it)! I was looking for a book to let her know her hair is special not something to be concerned about

Review: CONS Although I know the author tried to show afro hair in a positive light at the end of the book, unfortunately the damage of viewing afro hair negatively had already been portrayed in the beginning of the book, which was too late to rectify. The fact that Mai highlights she likes her friend Rose's hair because it's swishy and straight doesn't sit right with me, and feel it could have been done better. It's bad enough SOME (not all) little black girls don't like their hair, and Mai's statement validates, this thought, for those girls who don't like their hair in my opinion. PROS I did like the fact both girls wanted to swap their hair but again (for me) at this point it was to late to rectifies Mai's opinion about Rose's hair in the beginning. I also liked the fact both girls were happy to be themselves. LAST STATEMENT I can see how this book MAY benefit some girls who don't like their hair, but I don't see how it will benefit all or those young children who do not even think about hair types and so on. I belive this book puts a message in the latter girls heads about NOT liking their hair. I got two of these books by accident, and was going to give one to my neice, but I will not be giving it to her, or any other child.
