Review: Second in the series about Miss Charlotte, an elusive, eccentric and effervescent lady who makes a difference to children wherever she goes. Miss Charlotte takes a job as a librarian. The room is the size of a cupboard, the few books there are moth-eaten and she is not going to be given any money. But does this put her off? This is a series of short chapters that manage to convey the magic of books as the librarian goes off 'into' books (this isn't as well-used a device as I was expecting) and there are some lovely, cosy scenes as children learn to love their new library. As in the first book, Miss Charlotte transforms children's lives with her personality, and there is a link to her class as one student in this new town writes to a former pupil. With a few coincidences, the stories are pulled together and situations saved. The translation this time is less clunky, Ross's illustrations as sharply funny as ever, and the story a variation on the Poppins' nanny that young readers will enjoy, for themselves or with an adult. Will be enjoyed by children aged 6 and above. With thanks to the author for the sample copy, provided for my thoughts.
