Review: I have come back to this book for a second time to come up with further ideas for my private language lessons, and again i found this book a bit irritating. Certainly, there are some interesting exercises here but I would have preferred less exercises and the space used to give further examples. Each entrant claims to practice the exercise they offer so why not give us a couple of examples from their students. A second issue I have is, in a few instances, a list of examples is given. Unfortunately, may of these are unavailable on the net, and my library of poetry books is not so extensive. I simply don't possess that many volumes of American poetry. This book tries to be user-friendly, and that is to be applauded, but some of the entries seem so vague that I lost patience in trying to work them out. I don't wish to be completely dismissive of this book but if you only wish to buy one book I would not make it this one.

Description: Playwright, poet, spy, a scarlet woman condemned for loose morals. meet Aphra Behn, history's most fascinating female. There are few labels not attached to Aphra Behn - playwright, poet, a spy, a scarlet woman condemned for loose morals. And yet, for all her notoriety Aphra Behn is an enigma. Born in around 1640, her early life isn't well recorded and facts about her are continually disputed. Her birth name may have been Eaffrey Johnson and she could have been the daughter of a Canterbury barber, although neither fact is certain. And, just after the Restoration she probably briefly lived in the English colony of Surinam in South America, where she was perhaps embroiled in political espionage. Whatever the truth, Behn was in London by 1664 and six years later was writing for the stage. For a decade, Behn's work dominated the London stage. Then, suddenly in 1682, she was charged with libel. Her plays could not be produced and by the time of the trial of the century Behn was broke. She decided that writing would be her way out and began to write a novel based on the most notorious adultress of a notoriously adulterous age - Lady Henrietta Berkeley. Do you own all the classic Pooh titles? Winnie-the-Pooh The House at Pooh Corner When We Were Very Young Now We Are Six Return to the Hundred Acre Wood The Best Bear in All the World Once There Was a Bear The nation's favourite teddy bear has been delighting generations of children for over 95 years. • Waterstones Storyworlds of Robin Hood

    Price: £25.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Robin Hood is one of the most enduring and well-known figures of English folklore. Yet who was he? In this intriguing book, Lesley Coote re-examines the early tales about Robin in light of the stories, both English and French, that surrounded them - stories with which they shared many elements of form and meaning. In the process, she returns to questions such as ' Where did Robin come from?' and ' What did these stories mean?' The Robin who reveals himself is as spiritual as he is he is secular and as much an 'insider' as he is an outlaw. And in the context of current debates about national identity and Britain's relationship with the wider world, Robin emerges to be as European as he is English - or perhaps, as the author suggests, that is precisely the quality which made him fundamentally English all along.
