Description: A Richard & Judy Book Club Pick New York Times Bestseller Sara has never left Sweden but at the age of 28 she decides it's time. She cashes in her savings, packs a suitcase full of books and sets off for Broken Wheel, Iowa, a town where she knows nobody. Sara quickly realises that Broken Wheel is in desperate need of some adventure, a dose of self-help and perhaps a little romance, too. In short, this is a town in need of a bookshop. With a little help from the locals, Sara sets up Broken Wheel's first bookstore. The shop might be a little quirky but then again, so is Sara. And as Broken Wheel's story begins to take shape, there are some surprises in store for Sara too. 'The perfect summer read' Stylist. Review: I first read 'The Talisman Ring' more than forty years ago and hadn't re-read it since partly because I prefer the Regency novels and this is set a few years earlier than the Regency period. On re-reading it I decided I hadn't been fair to the book as it really is very amusing. It is a parody of the Gothic novels of the period with a lost heir, a villain, smugglers, secret panels and a missing Talisman ring. The dying Lord Lavenham wants his granddaughter, Eustacie to marry her cousin Sir Tristram Shield though neither of them have the slightest inclination to marry the other. Lord Lavenham's heir - Ludovic - escaped to the continent two years before after being accused of murder so he is not available to take care of Eustacie. To say much more about the plot would be to give it away. Suffice it to say that Eustacie's precipitate actions drag a group of ill-assorted people into adventures they could never have imagined in the course of their wildest dreams or nightmares. The characters are well drawn, the dialogue is sparkling and the story bowls along at breakneck pace with plenty of amusing incidents and some marvellous acting on the part of all the main protagonists. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the scenes and I could definitely see the book translated to the TV screen or a film. If you're looking for descriptions of social occasions and lots of beautiful clothes then you will be disappointed but this is a marvellous romp of a book which shows Georgette Heyer at her sparkling best in my opinion.

Review: This has potential to be a really lovely book. The setting of small town USA sets the tone of a slow paced plot that is easy to read with plenty of time to absorb the characters and get a few reading recommendations along the way. Sara arrives in Broken Wheel and doesn't have the welcome she expected. She meets the people who live in the town and decides to set up a book shop. Books are central to this novel from the first page when Sara has her nose in one. The range of books referenced within the story in extensive and it was lovely to be introduced to a few new books and authors which I will go on to read. There are lots of sections which show Sara'a love of reading which I related to Everything ticks along quite nicely until about halfway through when I started to get bored with the plot and by about 2/3 through I was ready to put the book down, only carrying on to see if everything ended as predictably as I expected. It is a great idea but the plot is too thin, it needed much more character development to keep my interest throughout the whole book. The obvious comparison is to the Fannie Flagg books and this book is very inferior to those.
