Review: This is #6 in the Bruno, Chief of Police series - readers unfamiliar with this series should not start here. Any of the first three books would be an excellent introduction to Bruno and his world. Readers without prior knowledge would struggle to understand why the Chief of Police of a small commune in the Dordogne is so well connected to the highest levels of the French intelligence services; or to know the background to Bruno's complicated love life. They would realise though that, despite its apparent calm and tranquillity, Bruno's patch of rural France is a hotbed of criminality. This book opens with precious antiques being burgled from an isolated chateaux, which just happens to be the home of a retired British spymaster. This crime is followed by the brutal murder nearby of a British antiques dealer. Bruno needs to discover the relationship between these crimes and how they could be linked to a notorious wartime train robbery of millions of francs by the French Resistance. A suspect is identified and a manhunt follows. There are numerous twists. Bruno is both helped and hindered by France's crime fighting bureaucracy, but he is also able to draw on the resourcefulness of his many friends in the area. Eventually he confronts his man but things are not what they seem. This is far from being a hard edged crime mystery. Walker's Bruno books are as much tourist guides as thrillers. They will surely be appreciated by readers who enjoy entertaining characterful stories, rich with the sights and tastes of French country living.
