Review: A slim book containing half a dozen short story mysteries involving the children from Caroline Lawrence's Roman Mysteries. Written for children but sometimes with adult themes, the Mysteries give a wonderful view of real life in Roman times.

Review: When I read this book I was very impressed by the author's imagination and ideas (which I thought were original). However, as I read the text at the back of the book, where acknowledgements and extras usually are, I came across a paragraph in which the author stated that she had got inspiration for two short stories (entitled THE FIVE BARLEY GRAINS and DEATH BY MEDUSA) from two Sherlock Holmes short stories: THE FIVE ORANGE PIPS (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes) and THE LION'S MANE (the Casebook of Sherlock Holmes). Later, when reading these Sherlock Holmes short story collections I realised just how much `inspiration' the author had taken from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The author used the same crime, motive, culprit and other crime details as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did in his Sherlock Holmes stories. Comparing both THE FIVE BARLEY GRAINS and DEATH BY MEDUSA to THE FIVE ORANGE PIPS and THE LION'S MANE it is clear that both Sherlock Holmes stories are in a totally different league to THE FIVE BARLEY GRAINS and DEATH BY MEDUSA. Though initially not badly written, both Roman mystery short stories cannot compare with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's style, intelligence and quality of writing. I advise you to read the Sherlock Holmes stories instead of THE LEGIONARY FROM LONDINIUM AND OTHER MINI-MYSTERIES.
