Review: Few books in my recent (reading) past have captivated me quite like The Switching Hour. The concept is simple, yet marvellous, a fabled monster that comes with the drought and takes away children and feasts on their dreams. Anaya has to go in search of her little brother, Kaleb when he is taken by the monster, Badeko. Okay, it’s a little bit dark but it deals carefully with themes of loss and the hurt children go through when they find themselves sharing their parent(s) with a new sibling. The writing is some of the most glorious I have been treated to in many a year. I couldn’t put it down. Destined to be a classic. Wonderful, wonderful book.

Review: The Switching Hour is an amazing story about bravery, determination and most certainly family and friendship. If you like tales that send a shiver down your spine - I can guarantee that you'll love this book. Just beware - it may keep you up all night. Amaya is a girl of about the age of 10 who has lost so much already. She lies with her little brother Kaleb, her granny Uma and her pet goat Tau. Then one night and evil creature known as the Badeko takes Kaleb to eat his dreams. Amaya now has 3 days to rescue him before he will forever fade from memory. Set int he dusty and plain outbacks of an imaginary land, in the middle of the worst drought in living memory, Amaya's race against time becomes as frantic as the village's need for rain... Tau is my favourite character because he is brave and never gives up. He is also very funny. Damaris Young is such a good author that she portrays this brilliantly through a character that never utters a word. I would love to see this explosive adventure turned into a movie. I really enjoyed how there were lots of cliffhangers and how they made me want to turn over the page every time. This book definitely deserves to be a thrilling blockbuster for children. I recommend The Switching Hour to readers 8+ who don't mind a bit of spookiness.
