Review: Enough of the unexplained to make it interesting. Not too much to spoil the story. Some good characters, good imagination and a few twists and turns.

Review: This is the second book I have read from Lincoln Child, I like his fast paced and easy reading style, however for the second time I find myself disappointed in the lack lustre and flat ending.

Description: Abraham Lincoln never wrote a book: his ideas are contained in speeches, letters, and various occasional writings. By bringing these works together into a single anthology, this book shows that Lincoln deserves to be counted among the great political philosophers. In addition to many examples of Lincoln's writings, this volume includes four interpretive essays that will provide an intellectual feast for any reader exploring his complex legacy. Danilo Petranovich looks at Lincoln's conception of the Union and its radically new focus on purging the nation of the problem of slavery. Ralph Lerner reconsiders Lincoln's relation to the American framers and in particular his effort to put the Declaration of Independence on a new foundation. Benjamin Kleinerman examines Lincoln's always controversial views on the scope of executive power during war. And Steven Smith considers the place of religion in Lincoln's political thought through a close reading of his Second Inaugural Address. • Waterstones Lincoln in 50 Buildings

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: It is no understatement to say that Lincoln's story is told in its buildings. This is at its most obvious in the cathedral quarter, where the city's Norman castle and medieval Bishop's Palace jostle for space alongside historic hostelries. Looming over everything is the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. This part of Lincoln is approached by way of the famous Steep Hill, which is lined with houses that date back to the medieval era, like the Jews House and Norman House. However, beyond this area, the city features many other buildings from almost every era throughout history, with Roman remains, medieval religiouos ruins, Tudor, Stuart and Georgian houses, and many fascinating buildings from the Victorian age and the twentieth century up to the present day, including Lincoln's infamous Victorian prison and the Theatre Royal that has entertained the people of Lincoln for over 200 years. Each has its own story, and many have a hidden history behind the façade. Lincoln in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating city through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place in Lincoln over the years. The book will appeal to all those who live in Lincoln or who have an interest in the city.

  • Waterstones Lincoln and the Irish

    Price: £14.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: From the founder of Irish Central, a fascinating piece of Civil War history: Lincoln's relationship with the immigrants arriving in America to escape the Irish famine. 'If you're a Lincoln fan like me, you'll love this book." | ?? Liam Neeson When Pickett charged at Gettysburg, it was the all-Irish Pennsylvania 69th who held fast while the surrounding regiments broke and ran. And it was Abraham Lincoln who, a year earlier at Malvern Hill, picked up a corner of one of the Irish colors, kissed it, and said, 'God bless the Irish flag." Renowned Irish-American journalist Niall O' Dowd gives unprecedented insight into a relationship that began with mutual disdain. Lincoln saw the Irish as instinctive supporters of the Democratic opposition, while the Irish saw the English landlord class in Lincoln's Republicans. But that dynamic would evolve, and the Lincoln whose first political actions included intimidating Irish voters at the polls would eventually hire Irish nannies and donate to the Irish famine fund. When he was voted into the White House, Lincoln surrounded himself with Irish staff, much to the chagrin of a senior aide who complained about the Hibernian cabal. And the Irish would repay Lincoln's faith | ??their numbers and courage would help swing the Civil War in his favor, and among them would be some of his best generals and staunchest advocates.
