Review: I'm wondering what is so world-famous about these puzzles? The Times brand? Take the first puzzle for instance, clue 17 Across: money of Portugal (ESCUDO). Since Portugal ditched the Escudo almost twenty years ago in favour of the Euro, and there's no mention of this being a former currency in the clue, such clues make me understand that HarperCollins has been recycling these puzzle collections for decades, in countless editions and under various brand names. Who are the authors by the way? There's not even an editor-in-chief worthy of mention. So the puzzles have probably been generated automatically by a crossword program and slightly edited at the end, or maybe not even that, at 5 minutes per puzzle. On top of that, these puzzles contain too many hyperobscure words that should have been avoided, because of the high percentage of non-interlocking squares. It would not have been such a big deal in American crosswords, which have nothing but interlocking squares. Puzzles like these should rely on a mixture of fairly easy, mostly common and surprising words, and challenging questions, in orde to provoke an "AHA" response from those who solve them. On top of this, the solution section is way too large (a whopping 153 pages out of 460!), with only two solutions per page. This book could easily have been 75 pages thinner, or it could have had at least 50 puzzles extra for people to enjoy, at four solutions per page. And why not 8 or 12 solutions per page? I have been a professional crossword setter for over twenty years now. I know when I am being tricked.
