Description: Discover Vice President-elect Kamala Harris's New York Times bestselling book about the core truths that unite us and the shared values that will see us into the future. The daughter of immigrants and civil rights activists, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris was raised in a California community that cared deeply about social justice. As she rose to prominence as a political leader, her experiences would become her guiding light as she grappled with an array of complex issues and learned to bring a voice to the voiceless. Now, in The Truths We Hold, Harris reckons with the big challenges we face together. Drawing on the hard-won wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values as we confront the great work of our day.

Review: This is a genuine review from a purchaser & reader. Gosh this is one very smart lady!! And this book is a real eye-opener for the way it is in the USA right now. I love what she says and what she is trying to do and has tried to do to help the underbelly of the richest country in the world's underclass. And the divide between those who have and those who have not could not be more poignantly presented. In some ways, the book is a bit of bare truthed horror. In other ways, it offers hope from someone who cares deeply and who is now in a position of power and authority to at least try to change things. There is every chance that she will succeed to the throne of power as America's first woman President and black at that, given Biden's health. Four years is a long stretch but, as we know, power does not really belong to POTUS. It rests with Congress whose eyes are not on the welfare of the people as much as they are on share prices and Wall Street. This book tells it the way she sees it and has had to deal with it to become the most powerful woman in American politics. Read it. You'll be educated and amazed in equal measure. I certainly was.

Review: While this was an interesting read, it was more of a political manifesto than the personal autobiography I expected. So, I learnt a lot, particularly how to pronounce her name (Comma-La) yet finished disappointed that I didn't get more 'Kamala'. 3 stars

Description: The Truths We Hold : Paperback : Vintage Publishing : 9781529114461 : : 02 Dec 2020 : Known for bringing a voice to the voiceless, Senator Kamala Harris is committed to speaking the truth. The daughter of immigrants, she was raised in a community that cared deeply about social justice and, from facing prejudice at a young age, Harris never hid her passion for doing what is right. Throughout her career, from starting out as a prosecutor right up to her position as California's Attorney General, and now as a US Senator, her hallmarks have been applying a compassionate yet data-driven approach to the thorniest issues, whether it's taking on the big banks or rejecting stale 'tough on crime' rhetoric as presenting a series of false choices. Neither 'tough' nor 'soft' but smart on crime became her mantra. Being smart means learning the truths that can make us better as a community, and supporting those truths with all our might. Through the arc of her own life, Harris communicates a vision of shared struggle, purpose, and values and grapples with complex issues that affect America and the world at large, from health care and the new economy to immigration, national security, the opioid crisis, and accelerating inequality. By reckoning with the big challenges we face together, drawing on the hard-won wisdom and insight from her own career and the work of those who have most inspired her, Kamala Harris offers a master class in problem solving, crisis management, and leadership. Description: How did we find ourselves in a post-truth world of alternative facts? And can we get out of it? A Short History of Truth sets out to answer these questions by looking at the complex history of truth and falsehood. It identifies ten types of supposed truth and explains how easily each can become the midwife of falsehood. There is no species of truth that we can rely on unquestioningly, but that does not mean the truth can never be established. Attaining truth is an achievement we need to work for, and each chapter will end up with a truth we can have some confidence in. This history builds into a comprehensive and clear explanation of why truth is now so disputed by exploring 10 kinds of truth:1. Eternal truths. 2. Authoritative truths. 3. Esoteric truths. 4. Reasoned truths. 5. Evidence-based truths. 6. Creative truths. 7. Relative truths. 8. Powerful truths 9. Moral truths. 10. Holistic truths. Baggini provides us with all we need to restore faith in the value and possibility of truth as a social enterprise. Truth-seekers need to be sceptical not cynical, autonomous not atomistic, provisional not dogmatic, open not empty, demanding not unreasonable.

  • Waterstones The Immanence of Truths

    Price: £18.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The Being and Event trilogy is the philosophical basis of Alain Badiou's entire oeuvre. It is formed of three major texts, which constitute a kind of metaphysical saga: Being and Event (1988). ), Logics of the Worlds (2006) and finally The Immanence of Truths, which he has been working on for 15 years. The new volume reverses the perspective adopted in Logics of Worlds. Where in that book, Badiou saw fit to analyze how truths, qua events, appear from the perspective of particular worlds that by definition exclude them, in The Immanence of Truths Badiou asks instead how the irruption of truths transforms the worlds within which they by necessity must arise. An emphasis on regularity and continuity has given way to an attempt, one unquestionable in its philosophical power and implications, to formalize rupture and reconfiguration. The Being and Event trilogy is a unique and ambitious work that reveals how truths can be at once context-specific and universal, situational and eternal.
