Description: In a letter of 1932, Karl Popper described Die beiden Grundprobleme der Erkenntnistheorie - The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge - as '.a child of crises, above all of .the crisis of physics.' Finally available in English, it is a major contribution to the philosophy of science, epistemology and twentieth century philosophy generally. The two fundamental problems of knowledge that lie at the centre of the book are the problem of induction, that although we are able to observe only a limited number of particular events, science nevertheless advances unrestricted universal statements; and the problem of demarcation, which asks for a separating line between empirical science and non-science. Popper seeks to solve these two basic problems with his celebrated theory of falsifiability, arguing that the inferences made in science are not inductive but deductive; science does not start with observations and proceed to generalise them but with problems, which it attacks with bold conjectures. The Two Fundamental Problems of the Theory of Knowledge is essential reading for anyone interested in Karl Popper, in the history and philosophy of science, and in the methods and theories of science itself.

Description: In 2019, D&B Poker published the ground-breaking work, Modern Poker Theory by leading poker theorist Michael Acevedo. This became an instant modern classic and many players regarded it as the greatest poker book ever written. Modern Poker Theory: The Tournament Workbook is the perfect companion volume. It is designed to be a completely practical guide to implementing GTO (game theory optimal) strategies at the table. It shows you how to apply the mechanics of GTO to any situation you encounter in tournaments, either pre-flop or post-flop. Fundamental GTO principles are analysed with an emphasis on applying the results to practical play. The opportunity to solve GTO puzzles then tests the reader's knowledge and enables leaks to be fixed. The most profitable way to play poker is to have an exploitative style of play. However, such a style must be underpinned by a sound knowledge of GTO principles. This book will give you that knowledge. Description: Few can imagine a world without telephones or televisions; many depend on computers and the Internet as part of daily life. Without scientific theory, these developments would not have been possible. In this exceptionally clear and engaging introduction to philosophy of science, James Ladyman explores the philosophical questions that arise when we reflect on the nature of the scientific method and the knowledge it produces. He discusses whether fundamental philosophical questions about knowledge and reality might be answered by science, and considers in detail the debate between realists and antirealists about the extent of scientific knowledge. Along the way, central topics in philosophy of science, such as the demarcation of science from non-science, induction, confirmation and falsification, the relationship between theory and observation and relativism are all addressed. Important and complex current debates over underdetermination, inference to the best explaination and the implications of radical theory change are clarified and clearly explained for those new to the subject. Description: In this cogent and accessible introduction to philosophy, the distinguished author of Mortal Questions and The View From Nowhere sets forth the central problems of philosophical inquiry for the beginning student. Arguing that the best way to learn about philosophy is to think about its questions directly, Thomas Nagel considers possible solutions to nine problems--knowledge of the world beyond our minds, knowledge of other minds, the mind-body problem, free will, the basis of morality, right and wrong, the nature of death, the meaning of life, and the meaning of words. Although he states his own opinions clearly, Nagel leaves these fundamental questions open, allowing students to entertain other solutions and encouraging them to think for themselves. • Waterstones Consciousness and Fundamental Reality

    Price: £16.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A core philosophical project is the attempt to uncover the fundamental nature of reality, the limited set of facts upon which all other facts depend. Perhaps the most popular theory of fundamental reality in contemporary analytic philosophy is physicalism, the view that the world is fundamentally physical in nature. The first half of this book argues that physicalist views cannot account for the evident reality of conscious experience, and hence that physicalism cannot be true. Unusually for an opponent of physicalism, Goff argues that there are big problems with the most well-known arguments against physicalism | ?? Chalmers' zombie conceivability argument and Jackson's knowledge argument | ??and proposes significant modifications. The second half of the book explores and defends a recently rediscovered theory of fundamental reality | ??or perhaps rather a grouping of such theories | ??known as 'Russellian monism.' Russellian monists draw inspiration from a couple of theses defended by Bertrand Russell in The Analysis of Matter in 1927. Russell argued that physics, for all its virtues, gives us a radically incomplete picture of the world. It tells us only about the extrinsic, mathematical features of material entities, and leaves us in the dark about their intrinsic nature, about how they are in and of themselves. Following Russell, Russellian monists suppose that it is this 'hidden' intrinsic nature of matter that explains human and animal consciousness. Some Russellian monists adopt panpsychism, the view that the intrinsic natures of basic material entities involve consciousness; others hold that basic material entities are proto-conscious rather than conscious. Throughout the second half of the book various forms of Russellian monism are surveyed, and the key challenges facing it are discussed. The penultimate chapter defends a cosmopsychist form of Russellian monism, according to which all facts are grounded in facts about the conscious universe. Description: Glasser has worked with choice theory for half of his 40 years of psychiatric practice. Basically, choice theory helps its users avoid confrontation and ask pertinent questions. It sees conscious or unconscious desire for external control as the main problem in the four major personal relationships: husband-wife, parent-child, teacher-student, and manager-worker. If you think you can control others, it counsels, you are in for trouble, for the only person you can control is yourself. So all personal problems are both present problems and relationship problems. Glasser urges anyone in a relationship to ask, before taking a step, whether that step will keep the two related persons at least as close together as they are now; if it will, it may be worth taking. Combining choice theory and reality therapy in his practice, Glasser has been able to shorten the durations of his treatment programs substantially. As he presents them here, his theories and approaches can be applied in education and business as well as for self-help. Waterstones Choice Theory - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: For courses in Control Theory. Modern Control Systems presents the structure of feedback control theory and provides a sequence of exciting discoveries as students proceed through the text and problems. Written to be equally useful for all engineering disciplines, this text is organised around the concepts of control systems theory in the context of frequency and time domains. It provides coverage of both classical and modern methods of control engineering to give students a strong foundation in basic principles that they can utilise to explore advanced topics in later chapters. Emphasis is placed on real-world complex control systems and practical design applications as well as evolving design strategies like green engineering and human-centered design. Problem solving is strongly emphasised, with an abundance of problems of increasing complexity that help students learn to apply theory to computer-aided design and analysis concepts using MATLAB and Lab VIEW Math Script. The 14th Edition incorporates over 20% new or updated problems, with a total of over 980 end-of-chapter exercises, problems, advanced problems, design problems, and computer problems.
