Description: UPDATED WITH TWO NEW CHAPTERS' One of the most provocative and startling books ever written by a British commander. an update of the two great thinkers on war and peace, Clausewitz and Sun Tsu, for our time. it is for anyone interested in the well-being of our world' Robert Fox, Evening Standard Why do we try to use military force to solve our political problems? And why, when our forces win the military battles does this still fail to solve those problems? It is because the force lacks utility. From Iraq to the Balkans, and from Afghanistan to Chechneya, over the past fifteen years there has been a steady stream of military interventions that have not delivered on their promise for peace, or even political resolution. The Utility of Force explains this anomaly at the heart of our current international system.' Britain's outstanding soldier of modern times. a book that will assure his reputation as a serious and original thinker among soldiers and strategists' Sir John Keegan, Daily Telegraph' It is hard to overstate the devastating nature of this book as an indictment of almost everything the West has done in recent years, and is doing today' Sir Max Hastings, Sunday Telegraph.

Description: The Utility symbol, CC41, is one of the most iconic symbols in the history of clothing in Britain; instantly recognisable to anyone who lived in Britain through the Second World War or the immediate post-war years. Clothes rationing began in June 1941 in an effort to cut down the nation's consumption of scarce resources; the Utility scheme was started 3 months later as a method of providing cheap, but well-made clothes for the less-well-off. The scheme was such a success that over the next few years it was extended to cover goods as widespread as shoes, furniture, lighters, pencils and household linen. Mike Brown looks at the background to, and the evolution of, the clothing scheme and the symbol as it changed to include more items of clothing, from underwear to fur coats. He also addresses the often misunderstood subject of 'Super Utility', and the so-called 'Dinner plate' mark, uncovering the truth behind a subject shrouded in mystery since its introduction. From somewhat hit-and-miss early garments, through to 'the Couturier scheme', the Utility symbol grew to be a mark of quality and value, which, post-war, slowly deteriorated until many were removed from clothes as a symbol of 'cheap and cheerful', and often not even cheerful clothes. A fascinating explanation of a little understood scheme with a wealth of knowledge complimented by colour photographs and original illustrations throughout. • Waterstones The Use of Force and International Law

    Price: £36.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Newly revised, this textbook provides an authoritative conceptual and practical overview of international law governing the resort to force. Following an introductory chapter, with a section on the key issues in identifying the law and actual and potential changes to it, the book addresses the breadth and scope of the prohibition of the threat or use of force and the meaning of 'force' as the focus of this. The book proceeds to address the use of force through the United Nations and regional organisations, the use of force in peacekeeping operations, the right of self-defence and the customary limitations upon this right, the controversial right of humanitarian intervention, and forcible interventions in civil conflicts. Updated to include greater focus on aspects such as cyber operations, the threat of force, and the 'human element' to the use force, as well as the inclusion of recent developments such as the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, it seeks to address the contemporary legal framework through the prism of contemporary challenges that it currently faces. • Waterstones The Royal Air Force Day by Day

    Price: £50.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: That heritage is preserved here as a diary of daily events -90-year-old tradition and established its great reputation. While so many books on air force history concentrate on the big events, The Royal Air Force Day by Day also examines the conditions that its officers not just of the great air battles, but of all that has built the RAF's, airmen and women, ground trades and aircrew, have experienced in peacetime as well as war. The RAF has had a heavy involvement in peacekeeping and offensive actions worldwide since the end of the First World War. This book covers the principal operational and administrative developments in the RAF's 90-year history. Published in association with the Royal Air Force Museum, whose library has provided much of the illustrative and factual content, The Royal Air Force Day by Day is a compelling mixture of the great and commonplace.

  • Waterstones Behavioural Economics

    Price: £10.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The controversial science that claims to have revolutionised economics. For centuries, economics was dominated by the idea that we are rational individuals who optimise our own 'utility'. Then, in the 1970s, psychologists demonstrated that the reality is a lot messier. We don't really know what our utility is, and we care about people other than ourselves. We are susceptible to external nudges. And far from being perfectly rational we are prone to 'cognitive biases' with complex effects on decision-making, such as forgetting to prepare for retirement. David Orrell explores the findings from psychology and neuroscience that are shaking up economics - and that are being exploited by policy-makers and marketers alike, to shape everything from how we shop for food, to how we tackle societal happiness or climate change. Finally, he asks: is behavioural economics a scientific revolution, or just a scientific form of marketing?. Waterstones Behavioural Economics - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
