Review: The illustrations really are as wonderful as others describe here, with a dream-like quality perfectly suited to bedtime reading. The passages are a good length for that transition between shorter and longer stories, with nice, descriptive language. However, I was left with the feeling that the overall story and the characters within could have been developed slightly (hence 4 instead of 5 stars) - a little more background around Lilly's grandmother and uncle Frederick for example, and a suggestion as to why he acts in the way he does. Although the story is lovely, I couldn't help but feel something is missing, particularly in the rather abrupt ending - perfectly illustrated by the fact that, at the end of the first reading, my 4 year old turned to me and said "Is that the end, Daddy?". Nonetheless we have read it several times since and he enjoys it greatly, so perhaps that should be enough - however both myself and my wife are very invested in reading time with our boys and therefore quite critical of children's literature.
