Description: Many fans of Robin Hardy's The Wicker Man (1973) may know that this classic is considered a fine sample of folk horror. Few will consider that it's also a prime example of holiday horror. Holiday horror draws its energy from the featured festive day, here May Day. Sergeant Neil Howie (Edward Woodward), a 'Christian copper," is lured to the remote Scottish island Summerisle where, hidden from the eyes of all, a thriving Celtic, pagan religion holds sway. His arrival at the start of the May Day celebration is no accident. The clash between religions, fought on the landscape of the holiday, drives the story to its famous conclusion. In this Devil's Advocate, Steve A. Wiggins delineates what holiday horror is and surveys various aspects of 'the Citizen Kane of horror movies" that utilize the holiday. Beginning with a brief overview of Beltane and how May Day has been celebrated, this study considers the role of sexuality and fertility in the film. Conflicting with Howie's Christian principles, this leads to an exploration of his theology as contrasted with that of Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee) and his tenants. Such differences in belief make the fiery ending practically inevitable.

And what's that tapping noise on the roof of your car.? The fields of folklore have never been more popular - a recent resurgence of interest in traditional beliefs and customs, coupled with morbid curiosities in folk horror, historic witchcraft cases and our superstitious past, have led to an intersection of ideas that is driving people to seek out more information. Description: It is nearly the summer holidays and Billy Dexter and his classmates are trying to finish their wicker baskets. Their craft teacher, Miss Beddows, is so appalled by Billy's efforts that she keeps him in after class for a pep talk. 'What about growing horns?' suggests Melanie. It is a challenge Billy has to accept. Brimming with humour and written in John Yeoman's matter-of-fact style, this story from 1961 is vividly illustrated with Quentin Blake's inimitable drawings. Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: What you have in your hands is a ragbag collection of the happiest of times, the small moments of joy that have been the seasoning in this cook’s stew. A little box of curiosities to dip into, to comfort and to distract, albeit briefly, from more complicated times.'. From award-winning food writer Nigel Slater, a lyrical and meditative volume of treasured memories and observations. Filling countless notebooks and diaries with odes to everyday pleasures, these are details of a life lived mostly in the kitchen, but which also tell of time spent in the garden, on trains and planes, of life at home and away. A view of snowdrops under the gnarled branches of an oak tree; the first letters on the crisp pages of a new diary; a battered wicker basket of dumplings fresh from the steamer. A Thousand Feasts shows that warmth and purpose can be found everywhere, even when the world around us feels dark and unforgiving.

  • Waterstones Blood on Satan's Claw

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Beware the buried skull underfoot and watch out for children with fur on their backs. Blood on Satan's Claw is widely regarded as part of the 'unholy trinity' of cult classics which gave birth to the film genre that would become known as folk horror. Along with The Wicker Man and Witchfinder General, it found new ways to terrify audiences using elements of superstition and folklore. Now, fifty years after its release, readers can experience the unearthing of this terror in the film's first official novelisation: a compelling and frightening retelling of the fate of unfortunate villagers sacrificed by their own children as devil worship infiltrates their rural existence. Written by the film's original screenwriter Robert Wynne-Simmons and featuring haunting new illustrations from Richard Wells, it is an atmospheric and defining cult classic in the making.

The region embraces an extraordinary range of art forms, from delicate shell ornaments to spectacularly decorated canoes and meeting houses. This volume accompanies a major survey in London and Paris of art from Oceania. It brings together the most up-to-date scholarship by the leading experts in the field, encompassing a dazzling array of objects from the region, including many that have never been published before. Also included are many works that have historically been overlooked, such as painted and woven textiles, elaborate wicker assemblages and expressively sculpted vessels, alongside works by artists working in Oceania today. Objects of great aesthetic beauty, these artworks are the product of a complex web of social, mythological and historical influences.
