Review: Revisiting these stories as an adult was really fantastic, having read the first four books when I was at school (when the TV series first aired). The Worst Witch All At Sea is the book I remember, and the episodes I remember from the show too. The premise, the actual story - all fantastic! Not to mention the artwork by Jill Murphy, my favourite thing about these books, is just improving with every book. Mildred having to give up Tabby because he doesn't fit in with all of the black cats is heart-breaking. Of course she craves to be back with her beloved pet, who has been given a job in the kitchens as a mouser, and on a school trip to Gloom Cove to visit a character from the previous book (Algernon Rowan-Webb) she manages to swap her replacement cat, Ebony, with her beloved Tabby. The best part of this whole book for me are the chapters where Mildred learns that Ethel has set the boat she is keeping Tabby on adrift into the night. The emotive language Murphy uses to describe Mildred's fear of the dark, the cold and eventually her sense of hope when she finds Tabby, are so powerful and for a children's book it really had my heart racing both on my first read and my most recent read. If I could give this book 5000 stars I would.
