Review: Well illustrated and always a great read for little ones - we're aiming for the whole collection as our little ones love them so much! Enjoyable to read as a parent too and the poetry is often clever as well as humorous.

Review: I have been getting all the Julia Donaldson books for the 2-year old twins I look after, but I have to say this one is more suitable for older children. Like The Highway Rat and Zog, it is not really suitable for toddlers. The language is to advanced and the concepts, such as telling stories/ lying are really beyond their understanding. So I will have to save this until they are quite a bit older. In any case, I think this book could encourage lying, as it explains storytelling ie lying in quite a lot of depth and presents it as something amusing. So I don't really want to introduce this concept when the children at the moment are very honest and don't know how to lie. I do find that occasionally in Julia Donaldson books there are themes which I don't want to teach children - such as with the Highway Rat (stealing), Superworm, (mind control and power games) - even though these characters get their comeuppance in the end - and The Ugly Five, which encourages acceptance of concepts like ugliness and social exclusion based on outward appearance, rather than accepting oneself and celebrating diversity. So not all of these books are something I would like to introduce. However, we do have Stick Man, The Snail and the Whale, The Smartest Giant in Town and others which encourage sharing, altruism, kindness etc. I'm not one of the "woke brigade", as I know life doesn't always work that way. I just think basic precepts such as honesty and kindness should be encouraged in small children.
