Review: This is a beautiful little book to hold and to look at. It is a beautiful LITTLE book, full stop. It is likely to have been written in one sitting. A bright primary school pupil could read it easily in thirty minutes. Do not be fooled. This work is not by Gichin Funakoshi, though you could hardly be expected to know that by simply looking at the cover. It is by Genwa Nakasone and it comes across as his attempt, in 1938, to please the Master with his short interpretations of the Niju-Kun principles. Funakoshi approved them. It is this that gives legitimacy, if any, to the work. The given interpretations are as obtuse as the precepts themselves and are hardly less terse. You would be well advised to consider writing your own and would probably gain more from doing so. As a karate instructor of many years I have been fascinated by the precepts and wanted to learn how to say them in Japanese. There are, however, some differences in the Japanese versions, written in Romaji, I have come across over the years. I purchased this work in the hope of finally having the definitive words used by Gichin Funakoshi, but was hugely disappointed. The greatest failing is the omission of Gichin Funakoshi’s actual words in Japanese. If you want to own a beautiful little book then buy ‘The Twenty Guiding Principles of Karate, the Spiritual Legacy of the Master’. Pay 25 pence for it at a second-hand bookstall and you will not feel ripped-off. Steve Hutton, 5th Dan (Shotokan).
