Review: Another great release from Vintage Classics. Von Arnim was the cousin of Katherine Mansfield, and she certainly could write. This was released in 1921, and imo it was an inspiration for Daphne Du Maurier's Rebecca, but while Rebecca is more a gothic melodrama, this is less plot driven and more of a character study, and it features one of the most mean and despicable characters I've ever read (it's close with Mildred Rogers, of Of Human Bondage) who is brilliantly written, as are the rest of the characters. It's also very ahead of its time and very entertaining to read. The pages fly by, and it has some unexpected hilarious moments amongst the increasing domestic pathos, pettiness and psychological cruelty that Wemyss inflicts on Lucy. I will buy more books from her.

Review: This book is not a barel of laughs particularly when it comes to women's issues but it's use of language is great particularly when it comes to the moè humorous aspects of the humorous aspect of the book. It ìs very gothic in nature. I feel like I have said this a lot in book review recently but I am mighty glad to be living in the time that I do as a woman
