Description: Tall, handsome Abdul Karim was just twenty-four years old when he arrived in England from Agra to wait at tables during Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. An assistant clerk at Agra Central Jail, he suddenly found himself a personal attendant to the Empress of India herself. Within a year, he was established as a powerful figure at court, becoming the queen's teacher, or Munshi. Devastated by the death of John Brown, her Scottish gillie, the queen had at last found his replacement, but her intense and controversial relationship with the Munshi led to a near revolt in the royal household. Victoria & Abdul explores how a young Indian Muslim came to play a central role at the heart of the Empire at a time when independence movements in the sub continent were growing in force. Yet, at its heart, it is a tender love story between an ordinary Indian and his elderly queen - a relationship that survived the best attempts to destroy it. Now a major motion picture starring Dame Judi Dench, Ali Fazal and Eddie Izzard, directed by Stephen Frears.'A tale of Empire and intrigue brought vividly back to life.' - Vikas Swarup, author of Q & A which was the inspiration for the film Slumdog Millionaire. Review: A great read. Lots of information that I was not aware not aware of previously. Detailed but written in a way that you are gaining insight into the people and the period without feeling you are being lectured . Really enjoyed it. Will recommend it to friends but keep my copy on the shelf rather than passing it on as I usually do with paperbacks. (That good)

Review: I saw the author on tv speaking about her book and it sounded extremely interesting. Covering a period of history that appeared to be shrouded in secrecy. Everyone knows about John Brown and his relationship with Queen Victoria which lasted 34 years but nobody seems to know much about Karim and his 10 year association with QV. The book got off to a good start and once QV started to be obsessed by her Indian you could feel the tension ruse around her from her Government officials. The story emphasised how everyone couldnt believe what QVwas doing for her munchi with constant improvements in his society position and awards. The annoyance and straight talking was brushed aside by the monarch who just would not listen to anyone. OK now the story began to get repetertive and ground previously gone over was reploughed.!! It seemed to go on a bit toooo long with a fairly thin story being strangled. Im glad I read it as I now a bit more about QV but it could do with being 75 pages shorter. Thanks for the history lesson.
