Review: I am a history buff, not necessarily a historical costume buff, though it's hard to separate the life people live from the food they eat, the houses they live in, and the clothes they wear. I looked forward to receiving this book but overall I was disappointed. I agree with the reviews that say the photographs are great: very nice black and white photographs of mostly the middle to upper classes of society; and apparently mostly English; and of men, women and (often overlooked in books like this) a few children. However, the index of what year the photo was taken and where, and who the people are, if known, is NOT next to the photo as I feel it should be, but rather in the front of the book making it very hard to easily access that information. The index is also a bit complex, in as far as being able to find "plate 81 on page 108" for example, which would be expected, instead I found it harder to find what photograph went with which description. It would have been so much better to have labelled each photograph, even if just with the index page number and a secondary number for the photograph such as "109/B". The clothing or costumes are not thoroughly described either, as far as the materials used and how they were worn: we simply see the clothes on the people. Some matching illustrations of the layers of clothing (MANY layers in the Victorian women's clothing!) would have been helpful. No photographs or illustrations of underwear, slips, nightgowns, shoes, stockings, hats, and all the rest are presented or explained. The clothing of the "lower orders" is ignored. We mostly see the middle to upper classes, and since we know they often had valets (for men), and maids (for women) to help them dress and undress and to take care of these complex clothes in a time before washing machines or dry cleaners, it would have been very useful to know more about that side of things as well. The photographs are very good. The cover photo shows a young woman in her (probably) best dress, holding a tiny parrot-like bird, almost too small to see: that was an insight into their lives and the types of thing I would have liked to have seen/known more about. There is one photo of a child by "Lewis Carroll" whose hobbey was photographing children: too bad they did not use the more famous (and better) photo he took of the original Alice of "Alice in Wonderland", the book he wrote for her! Overall, I was let down, and I imagine there are better books on this era available. I would not recommend this, except perhaps to be checked out from the library.
