Review: Everyone is in mourning for the missing member of the team and they handle it in different ways. This might drive them apart. Once again the enemy which was thought to be defeated rises in defiance. A few twists at the end don't answer all the questions and leave it hanging for the next book. I am glad the author has injected only a slight bit of romantic element into the story and not gone for the obvious. it's good to have the series not concentrating on the emotions of characters feelings for each other too much.

Review: I picked this up to read on the recommendation of my granddaughter, who's read (perhaps devoured would be a better word) all of the other books by this author. It's a gripping yarn about two young women who run a detective agency in Edwardian London and are engaged in battling a nefarious secret society bent on world domination. I haven't read the other books in this series, so a certain amount of back story is required to set the wheels spinning, but this is assuredly handled as Lil stays behind in London whilst Sophie travels to a vividly-portrayed Venice. The two stories are adeptly meshed, cutting back and forth as startling revelations and cliffhangers are engineered in each one, before a resolution is attained which still leaves some questions to be answered (in, presumably, the next installment of their adventures). I enjoyed reading this, and thought it well-written, with the minor exception of a character on p7 who "vanished into [the sleet's] blurry whiteness and disappeared", which - in case you were wondering whether he could still be seen - looked over-emphatic. A pleasant, stimulating read nonetheless.
