Description: Subtitled 'A tragicomedy in two Acts', and famously described by the Irish critic Vivien Mercier as a play in which 'nothing happens, twice', En attendant Godot was first performed at the Théâtre de Babylone in Paris in 1953. It was translated into English by Samuel Beckett, and Waiting for Godot opened at the Arts Theatre in London in 1955. 'Go and see Waiting for Godot. At the worst you will discover a curiosity, a four-leaved clover, a black tulip; at the best something that will securely lodge in a corner of your mind for as long as you live.' Harold Hobson, 7 August 1955'I told him that if by Godot I had meant God I would have said God, and not Godot. This seemed to disappoint him greatly.' Samuel Beckett, 1955.

Review: Very well acted, a real play on the scene, close to the author's text. Can only recommend it! Though I believe I had he last one available

Review: Bought this for my studies, and found it very difficult. I've given it 3 stars because I was using it to analyse and in that sense it's very useful, as there are lots of interpretations of the characters and (lack-of) events. It has very little plot and discussions between the two main characters have little comedic value as is intended, but instead seems very slapstick. Overall, I would definitely not read for pleasure. Another small gripe, this edition has no line numbers, which is difficult for referencing if you are using it to study from.

Waterstones Waiting for Godot: A Bilingual Edition

Currently out of stock

Price: £17.99

Brand: Waterstones

Description: From an inauspicious beginning at the tiny Left Bank Theatre de Babylone in 1953, followed by bewilderment by American and British audiences, Waiting for Godot has become one of the most important and enigmatic plays of the past fifty years and a cornerstone of twentieth-century drama. Now in honor of the centenary of Samuel Beckett's birth, Grove Press is publishing a bilingual edition of the play. Originally written in French, Beckett translated the work himself, and in doing so chose to revise and eliminate various passages. With side-by-side text the reader can experience the mastery of Beckett's language and explore the nuances of his creativity. Upon being asked who Godot is, Samuel Beckett told Alan Schneider, If I knew, I would have said so in the play. Although we may never know who we are waiting for, in this special edition we can rediscover one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time. Description: A hilarious, minimalist story about patience and the ups and downs of waiting from author-illustrator, Alice Courtley. Rabbit is waiting for Froggo, quietly and patiently. Mouse is also waiting for Froggo, but not so quietly or patiently. 'What's a Froggo?' Mouse asks. 'When will they get here? What do they look like?' Rabbit urges Mouse to wait but as more animals show up to join them, things start to get more busy and chaotic. Just as Rabbit is about to lose his temper, Mouse asks the biggest question: what if Froggo doesn't come? Inspired by Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot, Alice Courtley's Waiting for Froggo is a minimalist story of the ups and downs of waiting with brilliantly expressive characters and charming deadpan humour. Froggo is definitely worth waiting for!. Waterstones Waiting For Froggo - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Eleutheria

    Price: £12.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Written in French in the late forties before Waiting for Godot, Eleutheria is about a young man at odds with his middle-class family, living alone in a bedsit and refusing to take part in 'normal' life while accepting handouts from his mother. Often richly comic, it contains elements of high farce and draws on the traditions of French boulevard comedy and melodrama. This new edition includes the notice by Jérôme Lindon, in its original French, which accompanied the first edition in 1995, explaining the circumstances under which the play was first published.

  • Waterstones The Stature of Waiting

    Price: £9.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Experiences of dependence and of waiting are becoming increasingly frequent and widespread in contemporary life and yet we evade, repudiate or resent them. Vanstone's book, a modern classic of the Anglican spiritual tradition, looks at our attitudes to illness, to being out of work, to not 'doing' anything. He draws on the story of the passion in John's Gospel to transform our understanding of these experiences, by presenting Jesus as a figure who, in his waiting, discloses the deepest dimension of the glory of God.
