Review: The first in this series, GOD OF VENGEANCE, was a real step up for this author, a substantial advance on previous writing. This is not as good. There isn’t a whole book’s worth of material here. I am surprised by how often authors (particularly, it seems, of historical novels) seem to start their ‘trilogy’ without much idea of what will be in the second book, and quickly run out of invention, ending up filling the pages by any means. There is something of a sense of that here. There just isn’t enough story, the book focusing on rather too much peripheral stuff, descriptions, and so on, to drag the tale out. The events in this whole novel would occupy about six chapters of a book by Robert Low. That said, there are good sides to it. The writing is good (although the author should learn how to use ‘which’), a world away from the clunkier writing of his first books. There is a good strong sense of the historical period – his characters don’t dress like Vikings but think like people of the 21st century. Plus, the author has maintained the darker, harder quality of the first book, making it more of an adult work, and far more enjoyable. Not a landmark, but definitely worth a read.
