Description: Women in Sport celebrates the success of the tough, bold and fearless women who paved the way for today's athletes. The sportswomen featured include well-known figures like tennis player Serena Williams and broadcaster Clare Balding, as well as lesser-known pioneers like Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, and Keiko Fukuda, the highest-ranked female judoka in history. From the creator of the bestselling Women in Science, this richly illustrated book highlights the achievements and stories of fifty notable sportswomen from the 1800s to today, including trailblazers, Olympians and record-breakers in more than forty sports. It also contains infographics on topics such as muscle anatomy, pay and media statistics for female athletes, and influential women's teams.

Review: I bought this for my niece for Christmas, so I can’t comment until after next week. However, I did flick through the pages and it looks like an excellent read. Great to see a book that lifts up and supports women in sports with brilliant illustrations. Perfect for my niece who is swimming mad.

Review: This book is ok, some nice descriptions and positive storytelling. Unfortunately it is very geared towards American Sports Women and includes many who would not be instantly recognisable outside of the USA. Would therefore obviously suit the American market better than Europe where I stay.

Waterstones Women in Sports History

Description: Women are, and have been for many years, actively involved as players, supporters and co-ordinators in a range of sports and yet they are often missing from, or sidelined in, accounts of the history of these sports. Commenting first on the lack of inclusion of women in British sports history, the book goes on to examine aspects of women's participation between the late-nineteenth century and the mid-twentieth century more broadly. It draws together some of the latest research undertaken by international scholars working in the field, and includes case studies about golf, bridge, rowing, figure skating and athletics. Between them the chapters demonstrate that women enjoyed mixed fortunes in sport. They positively highlight the scope of participation, as well as the complex interactions and responses that participation generated on account of life stage, social class, ethnicity and national identity across time and place. The incorporated methodological and theoretical approaches invite readers to reconsider existing sport historiography and point to new directions for future research. This book was first published as a special issue of Sport in History. Waterstones Women in Sports History - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: On the face of it, women’s sport is on the rise, garnering more attention and grassroots involvement than ever before. However, the truth is that in many respects progress is stalling, or even falling back. Sharron Davies is no stranger to battling the routine sexism the sporting world. She missed out on Olympic Gold because of doping among East German athletes in the 1980s, and has never received justice. Now, biological males are being allowed to compete directly against women under the guise of trans ‘self-ID’, a development that could destroy the integrity of female sport. This callous indifference towards women in sport, argue Sharron and journalist Craig Lord, is merely the latest stage in a decades-long history of sexism on the part of sport’s higher-ups. A strong fightback is required to root out the lingering misogyny that plagues sporting governance, media coverage and popular perceptions. This book provides the facts, science and arguments that will help women in sport get the justice they deserve. Waterstones Unfair Play - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

Description: La Vie Jamais Raconté is the story of sporting suffragette Alice Milliat, and a captivating exploration of a forgotten pioneer of women's sport. In an era when women's sport is gaining well-deserved recognition, Milliat's work remains largely unknown, yet she played a crucial role in advancing its cause. Born in 1884, Milliat fearlessly fought against societal barriers, orchestrating four editions of the Women's World Games and establishing a French women's football team that toured the UK. Milliat relentlessly lobbied for the inclusion of women's athletics at the Olympics, and although she was ultimately successful, her victory proved bittersweet. Instead of being lauded, she was sidelined and faded from public view. This book sheds light on Milliat's extraordinary life and celebrates the sportswomen she elevated during the early 20th century. With her story finally told, her invaluable contributions can be rediscovered and celebrated afresh. Hopefully, they'll inspire a new generation to champion women's sport. • Waterstones The Grass Ceiling

    Price: £10.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A book which will very soon be acknowledged as a classic of Irish sportswriting' Ciarán Murphy What is it like to be female in a male-dominated sporting world? If you play with the boys, more people pay attention - but you get treated like an alien. Playing with other girls or women means you have to accept smaller audiences, diminished status and - for professionals - lower pay. And what if, as is the case for camogie player Eimear Ryan, your sport has a completely different name when women play it? What if you don't feel entirely comfortable in an all-female sporting environment because you're shy, bookish, not really one of the girls? In The Grass Ceiling, acclaimed novelist Eimear Ryan digs deep into the confluence of gender and sport, and all the questions it throws up about identity, status, competition and self-expression. At a time when women's sport is on the rise but still a long way from equality, it is a sharp, nuanced and heartfelt exploration of questions that affect everyone who loves sport. Praise for The Grass Ceiling'A gorgeous memoir about a life lived in sport, specifically a female, Irish rural life. I read it in two sittings.' Malachy Clerkin, Irish Times'A love letter to the GAA and a diatribe against the idea sport is not for women' Kathleen Mc Namee, Irish Times' Brilliant. Ryan's bold and deep search into so many of those internalised questions provides a fascinating collage of emotional detail' Christy O' Connor, Irish Examiner 'Lyrical, urgent, wise and bracing' Irish Times.

  • Waterstones Sporting Fashion

    Price: £45.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: This book offers a stunning visual record of the evolution of women's sporting attire in Western fashion over nearly two centuries. With selections from Keds, Pendleton, and Spalding and garments by Coco Chanel, Claire Mc Cardell, and Jean Patou, among many others, it features familiar names in the development of sport, industry, and dress, as well as significant rediscoveries. Standing at the intersection of the history of fashion and feminism, Sporting Fashion highlights the extraordinary impact of new technologies and evolving social mores on women's clothing for sport. It explores how the basic forms of women's sportswear we know today | ??from swimsuits to sneakers | ?? were developed and codified during a time when women were achieving more freedom. Full colour illustrations of sport and leisure ensembles are included, along with magazine spreads and archival images. In thematic sections, the authors approach the range of ways women entered into the sporting world | ?? from traveling to calisthenics, golfing to tennis, motorcycling to promenading. The book looks at examples of clothing that allowed women to walk freely and compete in sports previously restricted to men. It explores how designers both reacted to and encouraged the growing acceptance of exposed skin at public beaches and pools | ??and how cold weather fashion made its way onto the slopes and the ice. Never before have the garments and accessories that defined women's roles as both spectators and athletes been presented on this scale and in such detail.
