Description: Would you cheer if they sent you to Coventry? Could you stick up for Stoke or big-up Bracknell? Can you handle the thrill of Rhyl, the heaven of Hull or the mirth of Tydfil? In You are Awful, Tim Moore drives his Austin Maestro round all the places on our beloved island that nobody wants to go to - our most miserable towns, shonkiest hotels, scariest pubs, and silliest sea zoos. But as the soggy, decrepit quest unfolds he finds himself oddly smitten, and the result is a rousing, nostalgic celebration of mad, bad But I Like You Britain. Review: If this book doesnt make you chuckle you are either: dead, havent read it, american, one of the fat ugly people that live in these places,or the sort of po-faced prig who thinks people shouldnt be called chavs. The author sets off round britain to deliberatly visit the worst towns, stay in their worst hotels and eat their worst food. in the worst british car and listening to the worst songs (only time i question hisa judgement is when he unaccountably dissses the music of the great joe strummer. Yet its all dome with an almost cheerful affection. he sees the best in the worst places, sympathetically describes the reasons and course of their sad demise, is never patronising , not even rude about the people he meets. Its backed by facts , his descriptions are almost pictureful, writes well and comically - the writing itself is good, not just funny. Never dull, even given the task of describing yet another wet raony day, another concrette monstrosity, another ghastly bedroom. If he exaggerates at times for comic effect, thats fine by me. I have only personal knowledge of one town he goes to _Merthyr - and I would say its a pretty fair portrait. OK, so he left out the good bits - the nearby national park, cyfartha castle, the trevithic trail - but then the book is intentionally about the bad bits. Buy the book with that in mind and you will love it. And this is in a way also a tour of another era - the post wasr 50s, 60s and 70s, in all their comic crappiness. Its the story of the decline of sea side tourism, of fishing, of posts, of heavy industry. For all its awfulkness, the author finds something appealing in it, documents its slow erosion or rapid demolition and bewails the fact that replacing all the naffness is an even worse horror - the rise of the bland supermarket, the ubiquitous retail park, the boring sameiness clean, bright and souless consumerist temples.

Review: Quite funny in parts and indeed educational in parts. I too thought him a little bit condescending at times and the book is a little bit wordy I thought. All in all its not in the class of Bryson but its pretty entertaining.
