Description: Nowhere in Britain is more closely associated with a form of language than Liverpool. Yet the history of language in Liverpool has been obscured by misrepresentation and myth-making and narratives of Liverpool's linguistic past have scarcely done justice to the rich, complex and fascinating history which produced it. Scouse: A Social and Cultural History presents a ground-breaking and iconoclastic account which challenges many of the forms of received wisdom about language in Liverpool and presents an alternative version of the currently accepted history. Ranging from the mid eighteenth century to the present, the book explores evidence from a host of different sources including the first histories of Liverpool, a rare slaving drama set in the port, a poor house report which records the first use of 'Scouse' (the dish), nineteenth century debates on Gladstone's speech, the 'lost' literature of the city, early to mid twentieth century newspaper accounts of Liverpudlian words, idioms and traditions, little-known essays which coined the use of 'Scouse' to refer to the language of Liverpool, aspects of popular culture in the 1950s and 60s, the Lern Yerself Scouse series, and examples drawn from contemporary literature. In addition the analysis draws on recent developments within the fields of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology - particularly with regard to the study of language and identity and the relationship between language and a sense of place - in order to provide a radically new understanding of 'Scouse' in terms of its history, its representation, and its contemporary social and cultural significance.

Description: A VIBRANT MEMOIR OF A CHILDHOOD IN THE HEART OF LIVERPOOL The sixties: a new dawn for Britain - a kaleidoscopic crossroads where social upheaval, artistic revolution and excitement for the future rubbed up against urban poverty, inequality and post-war recovery. For comedian Crissy Rock, born in 1958, the following two decades would be the backdrop for a childhood and youth full of adventure, turbulence and discovery, with the city of Liverpool her crucible. In this evocative and nostalgic memoir, Crissy recalls, with extraordinary clarity, growing up in working-class Liverpool, in an era when traditional values of community, family and hard work still counted for everything, even as bold changes in culture, fashion and music swept through the city. In a series of snapshots, she paints a vivid picture of an iconic place in a revolutionary time: from a world of playing by the docks and in the tenements, to the rise of mods and rockers, Beatlemania and dancing in the Cavern Club, and the birth of all-consuming crazes like space hoppers and miniskirts. Written with all Crissy's trademark wit and honesty, Scouse, Choppers & Space Hoppers is at once a nostalgic recollection of a rough-and tumble working-class sixties and seventies childhood, and a celebration of Liverpool itself - a fond glimpse into the heartbeat of the North West from one of its best-loved daughters. • Waterstones Who Ate All The Pies The Life and Times of Mick Quinn

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Mick Quinn, the boy from a Liverpool council estate dubbed 'Little Beirut', always loved his birds, booze and betting. They said Mick had a sixth sense for great accuracy in his playing days - he could find a party from any range. Quinn says he only put £50 on each horse race - but liked to stay in the bookies for twenty races a day! Sentenced in 1987 to three weeks in prison for twice driving whilst banned, Mick's been accused of punching Peter Schmeichel on the football pitch and John Fashanu off it. On retirement, though, Quinn switched to horse racing, the Sport of Kings, but controversy led the blue bloods of racing to hang the scouse oik out to dry and he was suspended from training for two and a half years. Who Ate All The Pies? is the funniest and most honest football book you'll read for a long, long time. • Waterstones Liverpool: A Memoir of Words

    Price: £20.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Included in the TLS Books of the Year 2023 Written by an author brought up in working-class Liverpool in the 1960s and 1970s, Liverpool: A Memoir of Words is a work of creative non-fiction that combines the study of language in Liverpool with social history, the history of the English language and personal memoir. A beautifully written book, based on a lifetime's academic research, it explores the relationship between language and memory, and demonstrates the ways in which words are enmeshed in history and history in words. Starting with 'Ace' and weaving its way alphabetically to 'Z-Cars', the work illustrates the deep relationship that has been forged in the past two hundred years or so between a form of language, a place and a social identity. The account is funny, sad, full of surprises and always illuminating. It tells the real history of 'Scouse', details the multicultural complexity of Liverpool English, examines the common use of 'plazzymorphs', and shows how Liverpudlian words exemplify standard processes of change and development. Neither a memoir, dictionary or history book, this work crosses different fields of knowledge in order to weave an engaging and fascinating story. It is a book that will educate and delight Liverpudlians, students of language and social historians alike.
