  • Waterstones Scouse

    Price: £24.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Nowhere in Britain is more closely associated with a form of language than Liverpool. Yet the history of language in Liverpool has been obscured by misrepresentation and myth-making and narratives of Liverpool's linguistic past have scarcely done justice to the rich, complex and fascinating history which produced it. Scouse: A Social and Cultural History presents a ground-breaking and iconoclastic account which challenges many of the forms of received wisdom about language in Liverpool and presents an alternative version of the currently accepted history. Ranging from the mid eighteenth century to the present, the book explores evidence from a host of different sources including the first histories of Liverpool, a rare slaving drama set in the port, a poor house report which records the first use of 'Scouse' (the dish), nineteenth century debates on Gladstone's speech, the 'lost' literature of the city, early to mid twentieth century newspaper accounts of Liverpudlian words, idioms and traditions, little-known essays which coined the use of 'Scouse' to refer to the language of Liverpool, aspects of popular culture in the 1950s and 60s, the Lern Yerself Scouse series, and examples drawn from contemporary literature. In addition the analysis draws on recent developments within the fields of sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology - particularly with regard to the study of language and identity and the relationship between language and a sense of place - in order to provide a radically new understanding of 'Scouse' in terms of its history, its representation, and its contemporary social and cultural significance.

  • Waterstones Scouse, Choppers & Space Hoppers - A Liverpool Life of Happy Days and Hard Times

    Price: £4.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: A VIBRANT MEMOIR OF A CHILDHOOD IN THE HEART OF LIVERPOOL The sixties: a new dawn for Britain - a kaleidoscopic crossroads where social upheaval, artistic revolution and excitement for the future rubbed up against urban poverty, inequality and post-war recovery. For comedian Crissy Rock, born in 1958, the following two decades would be the backdrop for a childhood and youth full of adventure, turbulence and discovery, with the city of Liverpool her crucible. In this evocative and nostalgic memoir, Crissy recalls, with extraordinary clarity, growing up in working-class Liverpool, in an era when traditional values of community, family and hard work still counted for everything, even as bold changes in culture, fashion and music swept through the city. In a series of snapshots, she paints a vivid picture of an iconic place in a revolutionary time: from a world of playing by the docks and in the tenements, to the rise of mods and rockers, Beatlemania and dancing in the Cavern Club, and the birth of all-consuming crazes like space hoppers and miniskirts. Written with all Crissy's trademark wit and honesty, Scouse, Choppers & Space Hoppers is at once a nostalgic recollection of a rough-and tumble working-class sixties and seventies childhood, and a celebration of Liverpool itself - a fond glimpse into the heartbeat of the North West from one of its best-loved daughters. • Waterstones International Law and International Relations

    Price: £29.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: In this fully updated and revised edition, the authors explore the evolution, nature and function of international law in world politics and situate international law in its historical and political context. They propose three interdisciplinary 'lenses' (realist, liberal and constructivist) through which to view the role of international law in world politics and suggest that the concept of an international society provides the overall context within which international legal developments occur. These theoretical perspectives offer different ways of looking at international law in terms of what it is, how it works and how it changes. Topics covered include the use of force, international crimes, human rights, international trade and the environment. The new edition also contains more material on non-western perspectives, international institutions and non-state actors and a new bibliography. Each chapter features discussion questions and guides to further reading. Waterstones International Law and International Relations - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Is International Law Even Law

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: International law is so fundamentally distinct from domestic law that some even question whether it is the law at all. Unlike domestic law, in which the state can create, enforce, and interpret the laws, there is no higher authority above states in international law. As a result, states serve as both creators, enforcers, and adjudicators of international law and are subject to it. Most confoundingly, even though there is no higher authority than states in the international system, states tend to comply with international law most of the time. Further, when they do violation international law, they go to great lengths to defend their actions as within compliance with the law. To understand when and why states treat international 'law" as the law in our international system, one must understand both the components of a sound legal argument and the political motivations shaping how laws are created, when they are followed, and when they are ignored. • Waterstones Islands and International Law

    Price: £41.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Islands and their status in international law have become one of the more contentious issues in public international law. However, despite this, there is no contemporary book-length study on the question. This book fills that gap. Written by one of the world's leading public international lawyers, it offers an authoritative overview of how public international law operates in relation to islands. Key issues such as artificial islands, archipelagos, sovereignty, territorial rights, maritime entitlements, and governance are explored in depth. This will become a classic text in the field of international law. Waterstones Islands and International Law - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk
