Review: I was surprised to find this is a picture book. It has photos with simple captions. Not much detail. But provides a serious message in a fun way. If you know cats or a person on the spectrum you will recognise them. It also aims to help explain autism to people who don't understand it.

  • Waterstones It's Raining Cats and Dogs

    Price: £9.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The English language can be extremely confusing and illogical, especially for people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who interpret meaning in a very literal way. Why should an announcement that cats and dogs are falling from the sky indicate heavy rain? And what have chickens got to do with being a coward? It's Raining Cats and Dogs is a witty and stylish insight into the mind of someone with an ASD. It beautifully illustrates why people with AS Ds have problems understanding common phrases and idioms that others accept unquestioningly as part of everyday speech. The quirky drawings will entertain and inspire those on the spectrum, giving them the confidence to recognise figures of speech, feel less alienated and even use idioms themselves. The drawings will form instantly memorable references for those with AS Ds to recall whenever they need to and will be helpful for anyone curious to understand the ASD way of thinking. They will enable people on the spectrum and their friends, families, teachers and colleagues to better understand and communicate with each other.

Description: Not everyone with autism is the same. This workbook will help teenagers recognise their own individual spectrum of autistic behaviours, and reflect on the specific challenges they face, their own strengths and how they relate to other people. Using creative writing activities, this book helps teenagers to identify connections between events and their emotions - which can be difficult for people with autism - while improving their writing skills through fun activities. A range of examples of poetry and short stories are included to make each activity accessible to all levels and to show how writing narrative and poems can help support personal reflection. The book encourages the reader to explore the core aspects of autism including social communication, executive function, and sensory processing, and then allows the teen to create a template of their own spectrum of abilities within autism. This unique understanding of autism can then be used to develop individual strategies and encourage self-advocacy. Using this book collaboratively with teachers or parents means the teen can be supported in a way that is specific to them.
