Review: The authors lived experience is evident in the perspectives and approach throughout, making the book an 'easy read' with content that is as valuable for people on the spectrum, as it is to family and friends supporting people on the spectrum, as it is to the professionals who support and stand by who are seeking to understand. A broad range of relevant content makes for a valuable and must have resource for anyone interested in living well on the spectrum.

Review: I'm not quite sure who this book is truly aimed at, it seems to not know. As an adult diagnosed with ASD, and experiencing a very difficult time, I bought this hoping to find a kind voice with some good advice. Please be aware that much of the book demonstrates a very basic approach to various mental health conditions. Consider the book more like a short survey course, or a glorified dictionary. It also flits between trying to cater for NT people caring for those with autism, and autistic people themselves. It doesn't succeed very well at either. One of the most concerning parts of the book is the section on suicide and suicidal ideation. Aside from it being completely unhelpful and focused almost entirely on getting a person sectioned, the language used is really atrocious. I quote, from page 101: "suicide is extremely selfish". Then talks about the impact on the person who you buy milk and bread from. I'm not even kidding. I'm pretty sure that one of the Rule 101's of discussing suicide is to actively pursue other avenues of understanding that DO NOT incorporate such awful, retrograde accusations. Suicide is awful, horrible, terrible, sad, tragic, and a whole load of other things, but selfish it is not. Because, that would imply that those who are feeling THAT desperate are in full possession of their faculties and making a 'choice'. Anyone worth their salt in the medical profession would never be this careless with their words.
