Review: I am in love with this book! The way it is written spirits you away from wherever you happen to be, and takes you to a place where simple pleasures step into focus. Struggling many years with my own culinary ineptitude, I have collected a vast amount of cookbooks, learning the skills and techniques that could help me move from a lousy cook to at least a decent one. This book is special in that it taught me so many little things that make all the difference, that it has a special place, not on the bookcase but on my bedside table. Its not one of the glossy cookbooks that dazzle with pictures. Instead, it contains a vast amount of information that it must have taken a lifetime to collect. Fabulous!

Review: another perfect example of a book that combines philosophy with cookery with the result of a flawless melding of the two. as a culinary professional, i have found this book to be incredibly inspiring. i have used the recipes and techniques in the book both at work and at home, with great success. sometimes when i am exhausted after a long days work, i just open this book for a pick me up, whether it is the story of his son's batteria (the balsamic vinegar array) or his charcuterie recipes (not found in many other cookbooks) or the spare illustrations (so rare in these days of gastro-porn) there is clearly something special about this book.
