Description: Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog find excitement and adventure wherever they go in Enid Blyton's most popular series. Borrowing some scissors is the beginning of an adventure for the Famous Five, as George manages to get mixed up with some burglars. The others are too busy eating ice cream to realise that George is in trouble! Will the Famous Five manage to catch up with the burglars and save the day? In addition to the Famous Five novels, Enid Blyton wrote a clutch of short stories based on the characters. These were published in magazines and collected in the Famous Five Short Story Collection (Hodder). Review: Although, as a child, I devoured all 21 Famous Five novels many times over; I have to admit that I had not read any of the short stories based on the characters, which Enid Blyton published in magazines. These were later collected in the Famous Five Short Story Collection. However, this short book cleverly takes one of the stories and splits it into 8 short chapters, rather like the Horrid Henry chapter books for younger readers. At only 53 pages, this makes a great introduction to the Famous Five for children moving on to first chapter books, who might find one of the longer novels too daunting. Altogether, there are eight short stories which are due to be released as Colour Reads: Five and a Half-Term Adventure, George’s Hair is too long, Good Old Timmy, A Lazy Afternoon, Well Done, Famous Five, Five Have a Puzzling Time, Happy Christmas, Five and When Timmy Chased the Cat. The text is as Enid Blyton wrote it, making the modern illustrations a little jarring for those more used to the originals. However, my seven year old daughter loved the colour pictures . I would have preferred a more retro feel, but perhaps this will help introduce these great books to new readers, which has to be a good thing. It is a fine summer’s day in August and the children decide go to Windy Cove, where it will be nice and cool. However, tomboy George wants to go and get her hair cut, as she says it will soon be as long as Anne’s. When she discover the shop is shut, she decides to borrow some scissors from Mr Pails the ironmongers and cut her hair herself. The others leave her to catch up, but when some suspicious men pull up outside the shop in a van, George senses trouble... Although Enid Blyton has fallen out of favour lately, her books turned generations of children into readers and this is a great introduction to her work. This is a good read for children ready to move on to chapter books, with a small amount of text on each page, short chapters, lots of illustrations and an exciting story. Plus, there is lots of bold and enlarged text to help children read with emphasis and expression. If you press on the kindle edition, it will enlarge the print of each paragraph, which is a useful feature for beginner readers. The end of the book has a list of all the Famous Five novels for your child to read on and enjoy.
