Review: I bought these books for my cycle mad grandson who loved them. When he met Sir Chris Hoy he told him he had enjoyed all the books and asked when there would be more. A great series.

Review: How much of this book Chris Hoy actually wrote is open to question. Having read his decidedly anodyne autobiography, it is apparent that he (or his ghost writer) is certainly not writing from his own experience, describing a rather bizarre single-parent-family sob story. What has happened to Fergus' father is not yet clear (we may find out in book three, as yet unpublished) but it sounds pretty tragic. Fatherlessness is a serious subject and does not deserve to be used trivially in children's literature. Any child who is into their cycling will be disappointed with the books, too, because the Chris Hoy connection is but a tenuous sales ploy and there's next to nothing about cycling to learn from the book. Under the skin, the book is run-of-the-mill primary school library trash. It's not challenging on any level, the storyline is generally as ridiculous as it is predictable, and I am really sad about that indeed because I wanted to love this series and so did our son. Alastair Humphreys' lovely series 'The Boy Who Biked the World' knocks this all-style-and-no-substance effort into a cocked hat, and parents of children who love cycling, and adventure, would do far better to check out that series instead. I haven't given this review lightly and feel very sad to have to do so. It was potentially a great opportunity. Maybe a less-populist non-fiction book for the kids of the burgeoning youth cycling movement in this country was the book Mr Hoy could have written, himself, to informed acclaim.
