Description: Opened in 1931 as Yeadon Aerodrome, Leeds-Bradford Airport is the largest in Yorkshire. Regular flights began from the airport in 1935 with a service to Newcastle, Edinburgh and London (Heston). During the war, the airfield was used as a shadow factory and constructed almost 700 Lancaster bombers, as well as almost 4,500 Avro Ansons. Civil flights began again in 1947 and by 1978 Regional Airport status had been granted as long as runways were extended. This work began in 1982 and the new airport opened in 1984, with Wardair flying transatlantic to Canada in Boeing 747s. The airport has continued to grow, with new terminal buildings and new hangers to accommodate Boeing 737s in the midnoughties. Leeds-Bradford airport continues to grow in its ninth decade. Alan Phillips tells the story of Leeds-Bradford from its beginning in the 1930s, the war years and to the present day. • Waterstones West Yorkshire Buses in Transition

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: On 1 April 1974, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive was created by merging the municipal bus fleets of Bradford City Transport, Halifax Corporation with Calderdale Joint Omnibus Committee, Huddersfield Joint Omnibus Committee and Leeds City Transport. The new WYPTE was divided into four districts: Bradford, Calderdale (previously Halifax and Todmorden), Kirklees (previously Huddersfield) and Leeds. A new livery of cream and light green slowly but surely began to replace the blue and cream of Bradford, the orange, green and cream of Halifax, the red and cream of Huddersfield, and the two shades of green of Leeds. With over 1,500 vehicles and more than 6,000 staff along with the numerous garage and depot facilities, this was a huge operation. By 1976 changes were being made to the livery - while retaining the colour scheme much of the lining details were replaced and the district name under the Metro logo gave way to Metrobus. The photographs in the book illustrate this process of absorption of the bus fleets of Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield and Leeds from before 1974 up to the end of the decade. • Waterstones The Railways of Bradford and Leeds

    Price: £30.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: It was to the south-west of Leeds that one of the key lines in the development of Britain's railway network - the Middleton Railway - established the principle of seeking parliamentary sanction for the construction of a new form of transport. Five decades later in the early nineteenth century it was again the Middleton Railway that was at the forefront of the use of steam - rather than animal - power to move coal from colliery to market. From the early 1830s through until the early years of the twentieth century the local railway network continued to expand; indeed, if it had not been for the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 the area would have played host to one of the last first-generation main lines to be constructed with the Midland Railway planning - and partially constructing - a new main line north from Royston. In the event the line was never completed, consigning Bradford to be served by no more than glorified branch lines. Providing a largely illustrated account to the history of the railway development of the area, the book includes a fascinating selection of illustrations that focus on the evolution of the network in the almost eighty years since the end of the Second World War. • Waterstones Glasgow Airport Through Time

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The history of Glasgow Airport goes back to 1932, when the present site at Abbotsinch was opened and then occupied by 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron in early 1933. In 1940 Abbotsinch hosted a joint RAF/RN torpedo training unit and in 1943 the site became a Royal Navy base, HMS Sanderling. In 1963, the Royal Navy left Abbotsinch and Glasgow Corporation took over the site, having decided that a new airport for the city was needed. On 2 May 1966, the first flight arrived at Glasgow Airport. However, as the Government had committed to re-building Prestwick Airport, the new Glasgow Airport was only allowed to handle domestic and European flights, the rest going through Prestwick. In the late 1980s BAA sold Prestwick and the restrictions on Glasgow were lifted; in 1989 it became Glasgow International Airport and was massively redeveloped. Although further development is restricted, Glasgow is now the UK's fourth largest airport. Waterstones Glasgow Airport Through Time - shop the best deal online on thebookbug.co.uk

  • Waterstones Yorkshire West Riding: Leeds, Bradford and the North

    Price: £60.00

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: The West Riding of Yorkshire was the largest of England's historic counties. This volume, the first of two for the area, covers the northern half of the territory from the outskirts of York to the edge of the Lake District. It is full of contrasts, from the urbanised landscape of the cities of Leeds, with its proud civic buildings by Cuthbert Brodrick, and Bradford, possessor of one of the finest collections of commercial warehouses in the country, to their hinterland of tight-knit mill-towns and villages pushing into the Pennines. There can be found the highly distinctive houses of the seventeenth-century minor gentry, and the substantial yeoman farmers and clothiers. To the north-west are the still sparsely populated Yorkshire Dales - Ruskin's 'truly wonderful country', its beauties and curiosities admired by tourists since the eighteenth century. On the gentler eastern edge of the Pennines are the major survivals of the Cistercian Order: Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, the nearby cathedral town of Ripon and spa town of Harrogate, and the opulently agricultural 'broad acres' beyond, forming part of the Vale of York, counting among its monuments the magnificent designed landscape of Bramham Park. • Waterstones Southampton Airport Through Time

    Price: £15.99

    Brand: Waterstones

Description: Southampton Airport boasts a long history, with the first aircraft taking off from the original site at Stoneham Farm in 1910. Requisitioned by the War Office in 1917 as an aircraft assembly area, it was given to the US Navy to develop. The current airport was established in 1932, and was the test bed for R. J. Mitchell's prototype Spitfire. The airport was commissioned as HMS Raven in 1939, and subsequently spent most of the war in service with the Royal Navy. Regular air services returned in 1945, and by the early 1950s Southampton was one of the busiest airports outside of London. Despite the nationwide slump in air passenger traffic during the 1970s, huge investment was made by its owners Airports UK Ltd, and a decade later it was purchased by the British Airports Authority. Currently owned by Heathrow Airport Holdings, it is steadily climbing the ranks of the UK's busiest airports.
